About the role
The Photonics Transceiver Engineer, Senior/Principal will lead the development of high-speed digital photonic parallel optical transceiver products and related components at data rates up to 28 Gbps and above. Products utilize microprocessors and firmware. They must possess deep experience developing, qualifying and transitioning to manufacturing parallel optical VCSEL-based transceiver products for Aerospace and Defense customers in harsh environments including space vacuum and radiation.
Responsibilities
- Lead the development of high-speed digital photonic parallel optical transceiver products and related components at data rates up to 28 Gbps and above.
- Possess deep experience developing, qualifying and transitioning to manufacturing parallel optical VCSEL-based transceiver products for Aerospace and Defense customers in harsh environments including space vacuum and radiation.
- Stay abreast of technological advances in photonics and introduce new technologies that can improve performance and lower costs.
- Requires specialized depth and/or knowledge or expertise in the design, test, and release of new products, devices, circuits, and/or subsystems in an ISO-9001 or AS9100 environment.
- Be responsible for all design activities and related product development activities from design reviews, design verification, and qualification.
- Oversee the development of test and assembly plans and procedures.
- Own the Bill of Material and manage key vendor relationships, keeping abreast of parts obsolescence or opportunities for improvements.
- Provide clear status reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing test data.
- Expert in formal stage-gate new product introduction process.
- Awareness of the competition and the factors that differentiate them in the market.
- Impact a range of customer, operational, project or service activities within own team and other related teams, acts as resource for colleagues.
- Support Business Development proposal activities by reviewing customer requirements against MACOM capabilities, developing product concepts and sketches to support customer proposals and capturing new business.
- Work with other MACOM Product Engineering groups to transfer products to production in other MACOM locations.
- Support full environmental and lifetime qualification of products for aerospace applications including radiation testing in conjunction with offsite test facilities.
Key Competencies & Skills required
- In depth understanding of VCSELs, photodiodes, laser drivers, TIA/Limiting amplifiers and control electronics and firmware.
- Analyze best practices to improve product, processes, or services.
- Strong ability to solve complex problems and takes a new perspective on existing solutions.
- Fluent with relevant simulation tools, software, and test equipment (BERTs, DCAs, optical switches, attenuators, power meters, thermal chambers, etc.) for applications requiring data rates of 28 Gbps NRZ and 56G PAM-4 or higher.
- Experienced with chip-level integration and experience designing for high yield and low cost.
- SFP+ knowledge is a plus.
- Strong knowledge of the operation and calibration of industry standard test equipment.
- Experience with the design of evaluation boards including both high-speed electrical and thermal aspects.
- Familiarity with SolidWorks or other drawing packages is desirable.
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, physics, or similar studies.
- Advanced degree is highly desirable.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in relevant photonics design engineering with particular experience in transceiver design and transfer to volume manufacturing in an AS9100 environment.
- Senior / Principal title will be assigned based on the experience of the candidate.
