Photograph of an Enigma machine in use

Historical photograph of an Enigma I machine in use by Waffen-SS personnel, taken in Russia post-1941. This is the only known photograph showing the Enigma machine operated by SS personnel, identifiable by the distinctive 'SS' runes on the collar tab of the soldier in the middle.

The soldiers are seated on a fallen tree, with the Enigma operator balancing the machine on his lap. The operator appears to be adjusting the rotor settings while soldiers on either side assist in recording enciphered or deciphered messages. The photograph features scalloped edges, typical of the period.
