About the role

As a Phoenix Start-Up Service Leader, you will support ASU City Year Student Success Coaches as a role model and mentor, while continuing to coach and mentor elementary and high school students. You will help these students earn academic success, improve their attendance, and develop positive behaviors at school. You will plan and monitor individual student progress and work with teachers on whole-class instruction, breakout spaces, and other in-class student assistance. This position will also be charged with specific tasks that support a unique first start-up year. This role is unique to the Phoenix location and is only open to individuals who have completed at least one year in a City Year Corps Member position (Student Success Coach, Second Year, Service Leader, Team Leader) in another City Year location.

Responsibilities

  • Support start-up-year Phoenix site priorities, including training, school partnership coordination, recruitment, fundraising, and other operational initiatives that contribute to a successful site launch.
  • Serve as a peer leader and mentor to ASU Student Success Coaches by modeling effective service practices, supporting onboarding, and reinforcing City Year culture and expectations.
  • Partner with the Impact Manager to support implementation of the City Year service model through coaching, observation, problem-solving, and monitoring team and student progress.
  • Collaborate with teachers and school staff to provide targeted academic interventions (as needed) and promote positive student outcomes and a supportive school climate.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit for extended periods and occasionally stand or walk
  • Manual dexterity for typing, writing, and handling office equipment
  • Visual acuity to read screens and printed materials
  • Hearing ability to participate in conversations and respond to phone calls
  • Occasional lifting or carrying of items up to 10–20 lbs (e.g., office supplies)
  • Ability to communicate clearly in person, by phone, and in writing

Working Conditions

  • Operates in a school environment with extended interaction and work with students and adults; team/small group and 1:1 work majority, with some individual preparation needed
  • Requires travel to and from school site, as well as to additional meeting/training locations
  • Typical schedule: Monday-Friday, between 7:00 am until 3:30 pm
  • Noise level is generally high
  • Operates in a high-energy setting requiring flexibility and responsiveness to changing needs
  • Regular use of computers, tablets, and other technology for lesson planning, reporting, and communication

Schedule

This is a part-time, regular position. Staff are scheduled to work up to 34 hours per week during standard school hours, Monday through Friday for the FY27 start-up year in Phoenix. Occasional additional hours may be required for training or special events. Staff working shifts of 5 hours or more are required to take an unpaid, duty-free 30-minute meal break in accordance with City Year policy.

Pay

$22 per hour, paid bi-weekly.

Requirements

  • Be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident with authorization to work in the U.S.
  • Be 18-26 by July 1, 2026
  • Agree to and complete comprehensive background checks
  • Completed at least one year in a City Year Corps Member position (Student Success Coach, Second Year, Service Leader, Team Leader) in another City Year location

This role will not be eligible for City Year's standard benefit packages and is contingent upon completion of all satisfactory background checks, verification of your eligibility to work in the United States, and any other required documentation. Employment at City Year is at-will. City Year does not sponsor work authorization visas.
