Phlebotomy Technician Laboratory Assistant or Phlebotomist

About the role

Join our team at Geisinger Medical Laboratories as a Phlebotomy Technician Lab Assistant II. You will collect, accession, and process patient specimens in preparation for testing across various laboratory sections. This role involves both technical and non-technical duties, including assessing specimen fitness for testing, performing waived testing, and providing phlebotomy coverage in multiple settings.

Responsibilities

• Perform venipunctures and skin punctures to obtain blood specimens following Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines.
• Exhibit knowledge of adequate and correct collection requirements.
• Perform accessioning procedures accurately to ensure positive specimen identification.
• Safely handle potentially infectious materials in compliance with regulatory standards.
• Assess suitability and acceptability of patient specimens; reject unacceptable specimens per established protocols.
• Review order and specimen details for accuracy; resolve discrepancies as appropriate.
• Troubleshoot missing specimens and preanalytical errors, including courier log review and specimen archives.
• Accession and result specimens via appropriate computer applications; assign billing numbers, location codes, and physician numbers.
• Verify physician orders when test requests are unclear.
• Prepare specimens, including centrifugation, aliquoting, and labeling.
• Deliver prepared specimens to appropriate testing areas in a timely manner.
• Navigate and access multiple computer applications for specimen storage, retrieval, and processing.
• Maintain computer logs, quality control, disinfection procedures, and departmental duties.
• Manage phone inquiries and provide information regarding specimen collection, transport, and patient results.
• Serve as a mentor to students and new employees.
• Assist with packaging, ordering, and referral of specimens to reference laboratories in compliance with U.S. Department of Transportation and commercial carrier regulations.
• Maintain equipment, participate in preventative maintenance, and alert supervisors of equipment issues.
• Handle, store, and maintain supplies; notify supervisor of low inventory.
• Perform point-of-care testing, record keeping, and instrument maintenance within assigned duties.
• Complete related training and maintain competency for assigned testing processes.
• Provide phlebotomy coverage for Medical Group offices, skilled nursing facilities, or perform in-home phlebotomy for homebound patients.
• Complete initial and subsequent competency exams and departmental continuing education requirements.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED) (Required).
• Minimum of 1 year of related work experience (Required).
• One of the following upon hire:
  • Certified Phlebotomy Technician - American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).
  • Graduate of NAACLS-approved Phlebotomy program.
  • One year of related experience.
• Experience as a nursing assistant (NA), certified nursing assistant (CNA), medical assistant (MA), certified medical assistant (CMA), or similar will be considered.
• Military experience (e.g., US Army 68W Combat Medic, 18D, US Navy Hospital Corpsman) will be considered.

Qualifications by Level

• Phlebotomist I: Less than 1 year of experience.
• Phlebotomist II: 1-2 years of experience or graduation from Geisinger's School of Phlebotomy Program.
• Phlebotomist III: Qualifications of Phlebotomist II, ASCP Certification, and completion of internal preceptor course.

Schedule

Part-time, evening shift starting at 2 PM, with weekend and holiday coverage as scheduled. Shift differentials apply.
