Phlebotomy Tech I
About the role
The Phlebotomy Technician I at Coshocton Regional Medical Center is responsible for performing skin puncture or venipuncture on patients of all ages to obtain blood specimens for analysis in the clinical laboratory. This position reports to the Laboratory Director / Manager / Supervisor.
Responsibilities
- Performs computer data entry, filing, telephone communication and other clerical duties.
- Possesses adequate knowledge of the terminology of tests ordered in the laboratory.
- Demonstrates good communication skills and telephone etiquette in greeting patients and other visitors in a polite and friendly manner.
- Demonstrates proper phlebotomy technique and the use of equipment in collecting specimens from newborns to geriatric patients.
- Processes microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry and blood bank specimens.
- Processes specimens for referral to reference laboratories.
- Stocks routine supplies.
- Maintains the cleanliness of storage areas, trays, centrifuges, refrigerators, freezers and work areas.
- Processes or loads specimens on automated laboratory instrumentation in accordance with established policy and procedures.
- May assist in picking up samples at the hospital/OR, sorting samples for analysis, putting away samples, assisting pathology, inventory, replenishing supplies, ordering supplies, mailing pickups/deliveries, faxing, answering phones, product deliveries, etc.
Requirements
- High School Diploma, or equivalent, required.
- Current BCLS (AHA) certificate preferred.
- Minimum 1 year clinical laboratory experience preferred.
Qualifications
- Must have valid driver’s license.
- Must have reliable transportation.
- Must be able to lift 25 pounds.
Skills
- Excellent communication skills.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Basic computer skills.
- Good organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
