About the Role

Under direct supervision, the Phlebotomy Lab Assistant provides phlebotomy and accessioning services, utilizes appropriate equipment to collect, receive, accession, and process pathology and laboratory specimens, and provides laboratory information and reports to customers. Assists in the training and monitoring of co-workers, students, and other hospital staff.

Qualifications

Education: High School diploma or equivalent.

Experience: 6 months of related phlebotomy experience or 6 months of related laboratory accessioning experience.

Responsibilities

  • Extracts blood from patients, including children and infants, using established aseptic venipuncture techniques.
  • Performs detailed documentation for all phlebotomy rounds and outpatients called back, including physician offices.
  • Enters accurate and complete patient demographic information, laboratory test orders, and verifies collection/receipt of specimens with completeness and accuracy.
  • Prepares and processes specimens for testing in the clinical laboratory, including labeling, measuring, aliquoting, centrifuging, etc.
  • Distributes and retrieves specimens from appropriate work areas.
  • Performs quality EKGs and completes all required demographic information.
  • Screens and interviews autologous and therapeutic donors according to protocol accurately and completely; completes daily donor room QC and follows universal precautions.
  • Completes donor documentation accurately and at the time of donation.
  • Performs associated responsibilities such as centrifuge maintenance, label maintenance, disinfection of counters, filing, and boxing requisitions.
  • Stocks and maintains supplies.
  • Checks all outpatient orders for accuracy and matches requisitions to Meditech orders and labels.
  • Ensures timely response to all stat requests.
  • Accurately completes Quest and Sheppard Pratt registrations.
  • Actively participates in the laboratory’s continuing education program and shares knowledge through presentations.
  • Ensures patient safety by following procedures for patient identification using two patient identifiers.
  • Double-checks all specimens against orders entered in Meditech.
  • Packages and transports all specimens according to policy and procedures.
  • Ensures timely delivery of all specimens to the lab.

Pay

Pay Range: $17.30 - $25.11 per hour. Final salary offer will be based on the candidate's qualifications, education, experience, and alignment with organizational needs.
