Job Summary
The Lab Assistant – Phlebotomy Lead is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Lab Assistant / Phlebotomy team at designated In Office Phlebotomy or Patient Service Center locations. This position involves leading a local team of Lab Assistants / Phlebotomists. Performs, monitors, and troubleshoots the more complex needs of the department. Coordinates the day-to-day functions for assigned area. Assists with ensuring that departmental goals are achieved, timelines met and service excellence provided in all aspects of work. Serves as subject matter expert.
Essential Functions
- Assigns work; plans and manages priorities, provides technical assistance, oversees staff schedules, monitors quality of work, monitors team projects, mentors staff, provides constructive feedback, assists staff training, ensures quality improvement, provides leadership feedback on staff performance, and assists with goal setting for the team.
- Collaborates with staff and/or other department leads/staff on how to improve processes to improve patient care, service, TAT, quality and to reduce cost.
- Performs, monitors, and troubleshoots the more complex needs of the department both proactively and in real time.
- Manage staffing within their assigned region daily in coordination with the Reference Lab Phlebotomy Supervisor
- Oversees quality control documentation and department training procedures and manuals.
- Affords supply ordering, inventory management, and maintains appropriate par levels.
- Maintains daily checklists, temperature logs, and quality control documentation for accuracy and completion.
- Provides field support to clinic locations such as staffing shortages, or operational challenges.
- Serves as a resource for staff regarding downtime processes, specimen handling requirements, and laboratory procedures.
- Affords leadership with tracking supply usage trends, operational concerns, and training needs across assigned locations.
- Prepares specimens and forms for testing at the laboratory and for transport to external reference laboratories.
- Requires the ability to do Alpha/numeric data entry at a rate of 6,200 KPH or greater.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma Required: or equivalent
- Minimum of 1 year Required: applicable work experience within healthcare
Skills

- Strong communication skills needed.
- Ability to multi-task and report back on any key findings to leadership.

- Proficient in Microsoft Suite/Office.
Working Conditions
- Patient handling no greater than 35 lbs. without the use of assistive equipment and/or devices (NIOSH).
- Ability to move around area with occasional sitting.
- Fine motor skills to be able to grasp and control medical equipment (i.e. stretchers, wheelchairs, etc.).
- Frequent reaching/ grasping.
- Occasional bending/ stooping.
- Push/Pull: Frequently up to 25 lbs. force. Occasional up to 50 lbs. force.
- Exposure to biohazard, body fluids and airborne particles.
- Exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals.
- Time spent on site in medical/hospital setting.
- Vision and hearing required within normal limits (glasses, contacts, hearing aids permitted).
- Ability to communicate and exchange accurate information.
