Job Title: Phlebotomist VJob Description The Phlebotomist V plays a key role in specimen collection and processing, while also supporting troubleshooting, training, and workflow improvement within a fast-paced laboratory or hospital environment. This position focuses on performing accurate blood draws and other specimen collections, ensuring proper handling and documentation, and maintaining compliance with safety and regulatory standards. Responsibilities Perform high-volume blood draws, typically 35–50 venipunctures per day, using straight needles and butterfly needles as appropriate.Collect and store specimens, including blood, urine, and fecal samples, in accordance with established procedures and protocols.Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection processes to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all test requisitions or computer labels accurately correspond to scripts and orders.Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders to maintain specimen integrity.Package specimens for transport, ensuring proper temperature control, use of appropriate collection containers and tubes, and adherence to protocol for safe and accurate delivery.Update patient information and maintain accurate records of specimen collection, processing, and maintenance data.Perform decontamination procedures and follow established workflows to support a clean and efficient laboratory environment.Read and understand physicians’ orders to ensure correct specimen collection and processing requirements.Answer telephone calls and provide laboratory results or information to satisfy inquiries in a professional and timely manner.Attend annual department trainings and remain current with laboratory procedures, safety practices, and regulatory requirements.Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations, promoting a safe work environment and proper handling of specimens and materials.Contribute to troubleshooting efforts and make recommendations to improve workflow and operational efficiency.Demonstrate proper phlebotomy techniques, including venipuncture and capillary puncture, and assist in training as needed. Essential Skills Minimum of 5 years of experience as a phlebotomist.Minimum of 2 years of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.Strong proficiency in venipuncture and capillary puncture techniques.Demonstrated ability to perform 35–50 blood draws per day with accuracy and efficiency.Experience working with pediatric and geriatric patients and adapting techniques to meet their specific needs.Ability to correctly label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and store specimens according to test orders and protocols.Strong attention to detail in matching laboratory requisitions to specimen tubes and verifying orders.Understanding of and adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations and laboratory safety procedures.Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for data entry, documentation, and communication.Effective verbal communication skills to explain procedures and respond to patient and provider inquiries.High School Diploma or GED. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience in a high-volume, fast-paced lab or hospital environment.Comfort interacting with diverse patient populations, including pediatrics and geriatrics.Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously while maintaining accuracy and compliance with protocols.Strong organizational skills for managing specimen tracking, storage, and transport.Willingness to participate in ongoing training and adapt to updated procedures and technologies.Basic understanding of laboratory information systems and electronic documentation processes. Work Environment This role is based in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting that requires consistent focus, attention to detail, and adherence to established clinical and safety protocols. The work involves frequent interaction with patients of all ages, including pediatric and geriatric populations, and regular communication with clinical staff. The Phlebotomist V works with standard phlebotomy equipment such as straight and butterfly needles, collection tubes, centrifuges, and specimen transport materials, as well as computer systems and Microsoft Office applications for documentation and reporting. The environment emphasizes regulatory compliance, including OSHA and DEP requirements, and offers annual departmental training to keep skills and knowledge up to date. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Houston, TX. Pay And Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $23.00/hr.
