About the role
This position combines phlebotomy and patient registration duties in a hospital laboratory patient service center.
Responsibilities
- Perform venipuncture, capillary puncture, and bedside testing
- Ensure accurate patient identification and proper labeling of specimens at the bedside
- Communicate effectively with patients, doctors, and other hospital staff
- Perform accurate and timely registration of all patients accessing the laboratory patient service center
- Understand and apply knowledge of admitting/registration processes, receivables management, credit and collection laws, billing forms, medical billing regulations, insurance benefit calculations, HMO/PPO contracts, and third-party funding resources
Requirements
- High School graduate or equivalent (preferred)
- Completion of a phlebotomy training course or on-the-job training with at least one year of phlebotomy experience in a CAP-certified hospital laboratory (preferred)
- CPR certification (required)
- PBT (ASCP), CPT (ASCP), or equivalent certification (preferred)
- Prior experience in the medical field (preferred)
- Thorough understanding of clinical laboratory procedures
- General knowledge of medical business office practices
- Strong communication skills
- Basic understanding of business application software
- Ability to maintain calm temperament under stressful conditions
- Good math skills and deductive reasoning
- Proficiency in general office machine operations
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
- Ability to lift and move boxes of supplies weighing up to 30 pounds
- Extended periods of standing, walking, and use of stairways
- Exposure to bio-hazardous materials, chemicals, and potential infectious diseases
- Extended periods of sitting and extensive data entry
- Possible exposure to patients with infectious diseases
