Phlebotomist/Receptionist - Full Time

About the role

This position involves collecting blood specimens from inpatients and outpatients, preparing and delivering specimens, and performing general office duties within the laboratory department.

Responsibilities

  • Orders tests/specifically generates collection labels in the Lab Information System (LIS) for each patient.
  • Collects specimens as requested, including nasal swabs, nasopharyngeal collections, throat cultures, and skin scrapings.
  • Draws blood from patients using venipuncture and capillary blood collecting techniques, ensuring proper labeling and tube usage.
  • Prepares specimens by accessioning, entrifuging, and aliquoting them.
  • Sends specimens to Medical Technologists and Medical Laboratory Technicians for testing.
  • Confirms/processes patient information from outside agencies/satellite facilities using computer systems.
  • Maintains laboratory work area in a clean and orderly condition, disposing of contaminated supplies and materials appropriately.
  • Maintains/stocks supplies as necessary to ensure availability at all times.
  • Receives specimens from various areas and processes them into the department via LIS.
  • Answers telephones and responds to calls professionally, verifying patient information and explaining procedures.
  • Assists with office duties and performs other tasks as requested to optimize departmental workflow.
  • Maintains patient dignity and provides courteous service.
  • Identifies and independently resolves identification discrepancies and specimen issues, including inadequate volume, compromised integrity, and inappropriate specimen types.
  • Performs phlebotomy training for internal employees and external students.
  • Uses appropriate computer systems effectively and notifies supervisors of observed computer problems.
  • Performs patient registration in the Laboratory Information System at offsite locations.
  • Performs waived testing, such as the BD Veritor Covid antigen test.

Requirements

High School Diploma or equivalent is required. Specialized training program in medical terminology and phlebotomy procedures is preferred. Three (3) months of experience in medical laboratory is required.
