Responsibilities
- Responsible for the collection of blood samples from patients in house and the timely delivery of those specimens to the appropriate technical areas for analysis.
- Works with a minimum of supervision, requiring an experienced, highly-skilled technician.
- Interacts with patients, colleagues, and visitors with strong interpersonal skills.
- Identifies outpatients by verbal confirmation and positive identification system.
- Identifies inpatients using the hospital identification wristband and scanner.
- Labels patients’ specimens for Blood Bank testing using the positive patient identification system.
- Performs venipunctures and/or skin punctures with appropriate aseptic technique.
- Clears and accurately labels all specimens immediately after venipuncture and completes necessary documentation.
- Evaluates specimen adequacy and delivers them to the appropriate department.
- Maintains inventory levels and follows protocol for re-ordering supplies.
- Deletes or cancels orders with full documentation of reason and colleague spoken with.
- Collates requests, answers the telephone, delivers specimens to appropriate department, and operates the pneumatic tube.
- Demonstrates proper telephone etiquette and consistently assumes responsibility for calls, correctly answering questions, directing inquiries, and taking messages.
- Adapts work schedule to meet emergency staffing needs and is responsive, courteous, respectful, and cooperative in completing tasks.
- Collects TIMED and STAT tests within designated time period.
- Maintains supplies, carts, workstations in a neat, clean, and orderly manner.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Phlebotomy certification is preferred.
