Phlebotomist (Pay Differential)

About the role

The Phlebotomist plays a pivotal role at Kinwell in coordinating and optimizing patient care by ensuring accurate specimen collection, seamless laboratory processes, and compliance with safety standards. This position supports Kinwell healthcare providers by completing clinician orders for laboratory testing, performing limited point-of-care testing, and preparing specimens for transport.

What You'll Do

• Collect blood specimens using venipuncture and capillary techniques promptly and accurately.
• Ensure proper patient identification, specimen labeling, and documentation.
• Provide patient instructions for specimen collection (e.g., urine, stool) and post-phlebotomy care.
• Maintain a clean, safe, and efficient work environment.
• Prepare and package specimens for transport to outside labs.
• Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to specimen collection and equipment.
• Dispose of biohazardous and sharps materials according to protocol.
• Order and rotate supplies to prevent shortages or expired stock.
• Perform CLIA-waived laboratory tests and maintain accurate records.
• Conduct quality control and calibration procedures to ensure reliable results.
• Participate in quality assurance activities, including proficiency testing and competency assessments.
• Follow protocols for addressing critical values promptly.
• Interact professionally and compassionately with patients and healthcare providers.
• Resolve issues efficiently, including locating missing lab orders or specimens.
• Adhere to standard operating procedures for collection, processing, and reporting.

What You'll Bring

• Certification as a Medical Assistant-PBT (Phlebotomist) by time of hire.
• Active Washington state certification through the Department of Health (DOH) as a Certified Medical Assistant-Phlebotomist.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Documented training per CLIA regulation 42CFR493.1423.
• One year of experience as a Phlebotomist or performing whole blood collections.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care strongly preferred at time of hire from American Heart Association (AHA), Red Cross, or Military Training Network (MTN) or willingness to obtain within 6-months of hire.
• Experience with Quest Diagnostics.
• Experience using EPIC. (Preferred)
• Understanding of CLIA practices and testing.
• Ability to serve pediatric and elderly patients.
• Demonstrated clinical expertise and proficiency in clinical procedures.
• Demonstrated focus on ensuring quality in patient care.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks while maintaining strong attention to detail.
• Proficiency in using Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems.
• Excellent communication and ability to gather history and current conditions from patients prior to appointments.
• Independent decision-making skills and ability to influence others to resolve issues.
• Ability to work as a member of a team or independently without supervision or direction.
• Demonstrated ability to exercise judgment to handle sensitive and confidential information in a discreet and professional manner.

Working Environment

Work is performed within a clinical setting with frequent patient interactions. Standard office conditions with frequent use of computer, phone and medical record systems.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand for long periods and move freely within the clinic setting.
• Ability to exert up to 25 lbs. of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
• Ability to use a keyboard and to communicate clearly and understandably in person, and over the telephone.

Vaccine Requirement

Kinwell Health currently requires all teammates to provide proof of or complete a written attestation of a religious or medical exemption for influenza and Hepatitis B vaccines. Healthcare providers may also be subject to CDC recommended vaccines.

Pay

This role qualifies for +7.5% pay differential for employees assigned to a home location in a qualifying Kinwell Clinic, which is currently our Ballard, Denny Way, and Westlake clinics. The pay for this role will vary based on a range of factors including, but not limited to, a candidate's geographic location, market conditions, and specific skills and experience. National Plus Salary Range $47,400.00 - $71,100.00. National Plus salary range is used in higher cost of labor markets including Western Washington and Alaska.
