Phlebotomist-Mobile

About the role

A Mobile Phlebotomist is an experienced professional responsible for accurate collection and handling of patient laboratory specimens for diagnostic testing in Intermountain and non-Intermountain facilities, as well as various non-medical settings. This role enhances patient and caregiver engagement by adhering to established best practices. Mobile Phlebotomists travel to provide phlebotomy services in settings such as contracted care facilities, patient homes, and health fair settings, and also serve as part of the Outreach phlebotomy team within Intermountain facilities.

Responsibilities

• Perform specimen collection using techniques such as venipuncture, capillary puncture, PIVO, and throat swab collections.
• Collect specimens from patients of varying acuities in settings like contracted care facilities, patient homes, and health fair settings.
• Adhere to and enforce laboratory compliance and safety regulations.
• Safely travel to contracted facilities and/or patient homes to perform collections, operating independently with little or no on-site support for difficult collections.
• Follow personal protective requirements in inpatient and/or outpatient settings, including gowns, gloves, lab coats, face shields, and masks.
• Communicate procedures and instructions with patients and family members, demonstrating empathy during every interaction.
• Maintain accurate patient logs and monitor patient scheduling systems.
• Perform patient and client registrations and ensure accurate and timely record keeping (e.g., patient records, mileage for reimbursement).
• Train and mentor new staff, participate in specimen processing, and engage in special projects.
• Contribute to quality assurance processes, waived testing, technical writing, downtime planning, and continuous improvement projects.
• Perform other laboratory responsibilities as required by site or assigned by the team or department leader.
• Take on-call shifts and participate in holiday rotations as needed.
• Perform advanced collection and troubleshooting techniques such as bilateral nares or non-standard kit collection.

Qualifications

• BLS certification required.
• High School Diploma or equivalent, in compliance with CLIA regulation, required.
• Current driver’s license, insured and reliable transportation, and an acceptable driving record, required.
• Ability to communicate with the phlebotomy team on a personal mobile device.
• One year of Intermountain Laboratory Services phlebotomy experience, phlebotomy training, or certification as approved by manager/supervisor, preferred.

Physical Requirements

• Ongoing need to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, and identify equipment and supplies.
• Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors requiring verbal communication, hearing, and understanding spoken information quickly and accurately, especially during emergencies.
• Manual dexterity to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision, including frequent computer use and typing.
• Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients, bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment, including heavy items.
• Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining/distributing supplies and equipment, including pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment.
• Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms with equipment and power cords on the floor.
• May be expected to stand in a stationary position for extended periods.
• For roles requiring driving: expected to drive a vehicle, which includes sitting, seeing, and reading signs, traffic signals, and other vehicles.

Pay

The hourly range for this position is $19.50 - $26.48, with the actual rate dependent upon experience.
