Phlebotomist/Lab Clerk II

About the Role

Under the direction of the Lab Director, the Phlebotomist/Clerk II is responsible for all duties listed on the Phlebotomist/Clerk I job description, with additional advanced duties. These include ensuring specimens are collected and processed accurately and efficiently in the Main Laboratory and AOS (DRH Outpatient). The Phlebotomist/Clerk II serves as a resource for difficult draws and situations, assists in training new phlebotomists, and acts as the primary contact for phone inquiries and supply orders.

Responsibilities

• Performs phlebotomy, including pediatric and geriatric draws, with expertise in difficult veins.
• Greets and treats all customers professionally and courteously, adhering to DRH Standards of Behavior and core values.
• Maintains proficiency in specimen collection and phlebotomy techniques.
• Assists the phlebotomy team to ensure accurate and efficient workflow.
• Monitors supply inventory and notifies the Lead Phlebotomist or Pre-Analytical Specialist of low stock.
• Assists with difficult draws and other challenging situations.
• Works closely with all phlebotomists to train new team members and support specimen processing, venipuncture, and capillary blood draws.
• Provides troubleshooting for phlebotomy team members regarding specimen collection.
• Identifies and resolves collection problems or escalates to a more experienced leader.
• Maintains regular attendance and punctuality for scheduled shifts.
• Adapts assessment and care methods to accommodate physical, cultural, age-specific, and developmental needs.
• Maintains professional and technical knowledge through continuing education.
• Adheres to safety protocols at all times, including respirator and fit testing for exposure to airborne infectious diseases, droplet-producing procedures, or caustic chemicals.
• Complies with all required conditions of employment, including vaccinations (medical and religious exemptions available upon request).
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• At least 2 years of experience in phlebotomy.
• At least 2 years of experience in a healthcare-related field or medical practice.
• Knowledge of medical terminology.
• Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including fluency in English.
• Basic computer skills, including familiarity with email, software, and Electronic Health Record (EHR) tools.
• Ability to adapt quickly to emergent or urgent situations.
• Strong problem-solving, organizational, and prioritization skills.
• Attention to detail, precision, and commitment to accuracy.
• Proficient in pediatric and geriatric phlebotomy.
• Self-motivated with strong leadership skills and a willingness to assist others daily.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, team members, and patients.

Preferred Qualifications

• Completion of a clinical training program.
• Phlebotomy certification.

Requirements

• This is a safety-sensitive position; applicants cannot test positive for THC (including with a valid medical marijuana card).
• For positions requiring travel, a current valid driver’s license and automobile liability insurance must be maintained.
