Phlebotomist/Lab Assistant in the Lab Services Department
Hours & Shift
Part-time .5 FTE (20 hours per week), Day Shift position; Includes a weekend and holiday rotation.
Role Responsibilities
- Responsible for specimen collection, specimen processing, analysis, evaluation, reporting of waived laboratory test results, scheduling of procedures, entering of patient/testing information into the computer system
- Collect venipuncture and capillary specimens on patients of all ages
- Work with other lab professional staff, physicians, nursing staff and other ancillary staff professionals to provide high-quality care for patients
- Dispense collection kits for all specimen types, including urine, stool, saliva, tissue, fluid, etc.
- Receive specimens from internal (ER, Med/Surg, etc.) and external (Clinics, nursing homes, Free Clinic, etc.) locations
- Enter lab orders into patient charts from written requests
- Process samples for in-house and reference lab testing by following written procedures
- Answer phone calls from patients and other healthcare staff
- Aid with clerical tasks
- Perform waived testing
- Obtain and maintain DOT chain of custody urine collection certification
- Obtain and maintain DOT breath alcohol collection certification
- Follow all written standard operating procedures that govern the laboratory
- Stay up to date on assigned competencies and continuing education
- Cover departments and perform tasks as designated by laboratory management
- Participate in departmental and organizational performance improvement activities
- Be available to work weekend and holiday shifts on a rotating basis
- Occasionally work other shifts as required by staffing
- Work with all contacts using good customer service skills
- Perform other lab functions as directed
Qualifications
- Must have high school diploma or equivalent
- Must be able to work in a hospital based clinical lab in a proficient and independent fashion
- Past experience in phlebotomy, processing and waived testing is preferred but not required
- Must have excellent communication skills and must be able to work proficiently on a computer
- Prior EPIC EMR experience is beneficial
- Ability to work flexible hours including weekends and holidays
- Previous experience with the Microsoft Office Suite software programs is beneficial
