Phlebotomist, Inpatient - Full-Time, Day Shift

About the role

Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system, University of Chicago Medicine, as an Inpatient Phlebotomist in the Nursing Inpatient Phlebotomy department. You will draw blood under minimal supervision in the adult, non-critical care units of Mitchell and CCD using Epic Beaker Rover. Phlebotomists may be asked to assist in other areas of UChicago Medicine–Hyde Park as needed.

Responsibilities

• Perform venipuncture and skin punctures with expertise using Epic Beaker/Rover and in a customer-service-oriented fashion, adhering to all established policies and procedures.
• Properly package specimens for delivery through the pneumatic tube system and hand-deliver as required.
• Provide collection instructions to patients and receive self-collected samples (e.g., urine samples).
• Check-in patients and assist to draw room as needed.
• Stock blood-drawing areas/carts and keep areas clean, safe, and sterile.
• Deliver exceptional customer service including resolving patient order issues, communicating collection issues with appropriate clinic staff, and interacting with other hospital staff.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Completion of an accredited phlebotomy program.
• Ability to perform venipunctures and capillary punctures according to CLSI guidelines.
• Thorough knowledge of asepsis; manual dexterity and accuracy.
• Ability to follow directions and established procedures with attention to detail.
• Demonstrate ability to utilize institutional computer systems.
• Demonstrate ability to interact effectively with patients, colleagues, and other healthcare workers.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills required.
• Ability to complete tasks with accuracy and document appropriately.
• Ability to perform in stressful situations; handle large volumes of patients within narrow timeframes.
• Ability to stand, stoop, push, lift, and walk distances up to 6 city blocks.
• Ability to adapt to a rapidly changing environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Phlebotomy (ASCP) certification/eligibility.
• One to two years of practical phlebotomy experience with references.

Schedule

Day shift, 4:00 am – 12:30 pm; scheduled for on-call shifts. Days of the week vary; scheduled to work weekends (Saturday and/or Sunday) every other weekend.
