Responsibilities
- Perform venipuncture and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles in accordance with established procedures.
- Collect, handle, and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens following standard protocols to maintain specimen integrity.
- Explain venipuncture, blood draw, and other specimen collection procedures to patients in a clear, courteous, and professional manner.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that patient information and test orders are correct.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols.
- Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or order to ensure 100% accuracy.
- Package specimens for transport, ensuring they are placed in appropriate containers or tubes and stored at required temperatures.
- Record maintenance data and perform decontamination procedures in accordance with laboratory guidelines.
- Update patient information accurately in the system and maintain clear, complete documentation of all collections.
- Understand and fully interpret physicians’ orders to ensure proper tests and collections are performed.
- Answer telephone calls and provide laboratory results or information as appropriate to satisfy inquiries.
- Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and regulatory requirements.
- Attend and actively participate in annual department trainings and ongoing competency assessments.
- Assist with troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection, processing, or workflow.
- Make recommendations to improve workflow efficiency and overall quality of laboratory services.
Requirements
- Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
- Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
- 2–4 years of overall experience in a related healthcare or laboratory role.
- Proven proficiency in performing venipuncture and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Demonstrated experience in labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and packaging specimens according to test orders.
- Accuracy in matching laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verifying all patient and test information.
- Strong attention to detail to ensure 100% accuracy in test requisitions, labels, and documentation.
- Working knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations and adherence to safety and compliance standards.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for data entry, record keeping, and communication.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Effective verbal communication skills to explain procedures clearly and courteously to patients and staff.
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment while maintaining quality and accuracy.
- Experience in Pediatry.
