Phlebotomist II - Float

Responsibilities

  • Greet patients professionally as they arrive at the laboratory and provide a welcoming, patient-focused experience.
  • Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures clearly and courteously so patients understand the process and feel at ease.
  • Perform blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles, demonstrating proper technique and adherence to safety protocols.
  • Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and test requirements.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms or computer-generated labels to specimen tubes to ensure 100% accuracy.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and otherwise process specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols.
  • Package specimens for transport, following all procedures necessary to maintain specimen integrity, including correct containers and temperature requirements.
  • Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and compliance standards.
  • Attend required annual department trainings and maintain current knowledge of laboratory procedures and safety guidelines.
  • Answer telephone calls, provide laboratory results as appropriate, and respond to inquiries in a professional and timely manner.
  • Update patient information accurately in the system and perform data entry related to specimen collection and processing.
  • Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks to keep equipment and work areas clean, safe, and compliant.
  • Prepare collection sites, including proper patient identification, site cleansing, and equipment setup prior to venipuncture or other specimen collection.
  • Handle insurance and billing-related tasks associated with lab services, ensuring accurate information and documentation.
  • Process samples from collection through final preparation for testing or transport, following all laboratory protocols.
  • Provide excellent customer service to patients, demonstrating empathy, patience, and a patient-first mindset.
  • Collaborate with physicians and other healthcare professionals by fully understanding and following all physician orders related to laboratory testing.
  • Demonstrate reliability through consistent attendance and punctuality, and contribute positively to a strong team environment.
  • Float between assigned locations in Newberg, Bridgeport, Sherwood, and Portland as scheduled, adapting to different sites while maintaining consistent service quality.

Essential Skills

  • At least 6 months of hands-on phlebotomy experience, including routine venipuncture.
  • Demonstrated experience drawing blood using straight needles and butterfly needles.
  • Proficiency in blood collection, specimen collection, and specimen processing procedures.
  • Able to perform centrifuging and other specimen preparation steps accurately and safely.
  • Phlebotomy certification (where required by local or organizational standards).
  • Previous customer service experience in any setting, with a strong focus on patient interaction.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic data entry, documentation, and communication.
  • Understanding of OSHA and DEP regulations and willingness to comply with all safety requirements.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Strong patient-first mindset and commitment to delivering excellent customer service.
  • Ability to take feedback well and eagerness to learn and improve.
  • Prominent reliability and positive attendance record.
  • Positive, hardworking attitude with the ability to take initiative and work well with others.
  • Comfort working with diverse patient populations, including geriatrics.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with venipuncture across a variety of patient types, including those requiring special care or techniques.
  • Experience handling a range of specimen types, including blood, urine, and fecal specimens.
  • Familiarity with laboratory information systems and computer labeling for test requisitions.
  • Ability to read and interpret physician orders and match them accurately to laboratory requisitions.
  • Strong attention to detail to ensure 100% accuracy in specimen labeling and test ordering.
  • Effective communication skills for explaining procedures and answering patient and provider questions.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment while maintaining high quality standards.
  • Comfort working as a float across multiple locations and adapting quickly to different teams and workflows.
  • Interest in long-term growth opportunities within a large, global laboratory organization, including potential movement into lab, sales, or client services roles.
  • Alignment with a strong team environment and collaborative culture.
