About the role
The Phlebotomist collects patient specimens, performs venous and capillary punctures, and processes specimens for analysis. They handle telephone requests or inquiries, provide instructions to clients and patients regarding specimen collection, and enter test orders from paper requisitions into the Laboratory System. Waived testing is performed as requested.
Responsibilities
- Collect patient specimens via venous and capillary punctures.
- Process specimens for analysis and ensure proper handling, transporting, and processing.
- Handle telephone requests or inquiries and provide instructions to clients and patients regarding specimen collection.
- Enter test orders from paper requisitions into the Laboratory System.
- Perform waived testing as requested.
Requirements
- Basic knowledge in the use of computers.
- Knowledge of the circulatory system and blood composition.
- Ability to understand medical terminology.
- Proficiency in applying venipuncture and capillary techniques.
- Knowledge of processes related to handling, transporting, and processing laboratory specimens.
- Knowledge of processes associated with waived testing.
- Knowledge of blood and non-blood specimen collection processes.
- Ability to adhere to safety, quality assurance/control, and regulatory applications.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
Work Experience
- One year of phlebotomy experience preferred.
Education And Training
- High School diploma or equivalent education required.
- Phlebotomist or Medical Assistant certificate of course completion required.
