About the role

The Phlebotomist II plays a key role in safely collecting, processing, and documenting patient specimens while providing courteous, professional service. This position performs high-volume blood draws and other specimen collections, troubleshoots issues in the workflow, supports training needs, and recommends process improvements to maintain efficient and accurate laboratory operations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform blood draws using venipuncture techniques, including straight needles and butterfly needles, consistently achieving 20 or more draws per day.
  • Collect, label, and store blood and other specimens, such as urine or fecal samples, according to established procedures and protocols.
  • Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients to help reduce anxiety and ensure understanding.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all test requisitions or computer labels against orders to ensure 100% accuracy.
  • Centrifuge, split, freeze, and otherwise process specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols.
  • Package specimens for transport, including placing samples in appropriate collection containers or tubes, labeling accurately, and following procedures to maintain specimen integrity and required temperatures.
  • Record maintenance data and perform decontamination procedures in accordance with laboratory standards.
  • Update and maintain accurate patient and specimen information in the appropriate systems.
  • Fully understand and interpret physicians' orders to ensure proper specimen collection and processing.
  • Maintain sterile equipment and adhere to infection control practices during all specimen collection activities.
  • Assist patients who experience adverse reactions during or after blood draws or other specimen collection procedures.
  • Answer telephone calls, provide information, and read laboratory results as needed to respond to inquiries.
  • Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety guidelines.
  • Attend and complete required annual department trainings to stay current on procedures and regulations.
  • Float between Patient Service Centers (PSC) and In-Office Phlebotomy (IOP) locations as needed, including traveling when required.
  • Contribute to a positive patient experience through professional communication, customer service, and respectful care.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum of 2 years of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in blood drawing and venipuncture techniques, including capillary puncture and specimen collection.
  • Experience performing 20 or more blood draws per day in a clinical environment.
  • Ability to use straight needles and butterfly needles safely and effectively.
  • Strong skills in specimen labeling, documentation, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and processing according to test orders.
  • Ability to accurately match laboratory requisitions to specimen tubes and verify orders against scripts or computer labels.
  • Knowledge of proper specimen storage requirements, including temperature control and handling procedures.
  • Understanding of OSHA and DEP regulations and commitment to safety and compliance.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Strong customer service skills, including the ability to explain procedures clearly and courteously and to help reduce patient anxiety.
  • Ability to maintain sterile equipment and follow infection control protocols.
  • Capability to assist patients experiencing adverse reactions during or after specimen collection.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Phlebotomist certification or formal phlebotomy training.
  • Experience working in both Patient Service Centers (PSC) and In-Office Phlebotomy (IOP) settings.
  • Prior experience handling multiple specimen types, including blood, urine, and fecal samples.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in labeling, documentation, and order verification.
  • Effective communication skills for interacting with patients, clinical staff, and laboratory personnel.
  • Ability to troubleshoot workflow issues and make recommendations to improve efficiency.
  • Willingness and ability to travel between locations when required.

Work Environment

This role operates in a fast-paced clinical and laboratory environment that may include Patient Service Centers and in-office phlebotomy locations. The position involves performing a high volume of daily blood draws and handling various specimen types under strict safety, infection control, and regulatory standards. You will use standard phlebotomy equipment, including straight and butterfly needles, centrifuges, collection tubes, and computer systems, as well as common office software such as the Microsoft Office Suite. The work requires frequent interaction with patients, clinical staff, and laboratory teams, and includes answering phone inquiries and reading laboratory results. Travel between different collection sites may be required, and you are expected to adhere to all safety protocols and professional appearance standards appropriate for a clinical setting.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of Shenandoah, TX.

Pay

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $22.00/hr.
