Phlebotomist II
About the role
This Phlebotomist role focuses on providing high-quality specimen collection and patient care in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting. You will perform blood draws and other specimen collections, ensure accurate labeling and processing, support workflow improvements, and assist with troubleshooting and training. The position requires strong attention to detail, clear communication with patients and clinical staff, and strict adherence to safety and regulatory standards.
Responsibilities
- Perform venipunctures and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles in a safe, efficient, and patient-focused manner.
- Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and protocols.
- Explain venipuncture, blood draw, and other specimen collection procedures to patients in a clear, courteous, and professional manner.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all information to ensure 100% accuracy.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols.
- Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the order or script to confirm accuracy before processing.
- Package specimens for transport and follow all procedures necessary to maintain specimen integrity during handling and shipment.
- Store specimen samples at the required temperatures and place them in the appropriate collection containers or tubes with accurate labeling.
- Understand and fully interpret physicians' orders to ensure correct specimen collection and processing.
- Record maintenance data and perform decontamination procedures according to laboratory standards.
- Assist with troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection, labeling, processing, and workflow.
- Make recommendations to improve workflow efficiency and support continuous process improvement.
- Attend annual department trainings and maintain up-to-date knowledge of procedures and safety requirements.
- Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety guidelines.
- Answer telephone calls, respond to inquiries, and read laboratory results to callers as appropriate, following established protocols.
- Provide support and training to colleagues as needed to ensure consistent, high-quality phlebotomy practices.
Requirements
- Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
- Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
- 2–4 years of overall experience in a related healthcare or laboratory role.
- Demonstrated proficiency in phlebotomy, including venipuncture and blood draw techniques.
- Ability to perform blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Experience with specimen handling, including labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and packaging for transport.
- Strong patient care skills, including the ability to communicate procedures clearly and courteously.
- Ability to accurately match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify information.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- High School Diploma or GED.
Pay & benefits
The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $22.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Manassas, VA. This is a fully onsite position.
