Phlebotomist I - SLC

Responsibilities

• Perform venipunctures and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles in a safe, accurate, and efficient manner.
• Collect and store blood and other specimens, such as urine or fecal samples, according to established procedures and specific test requirements.
• Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all information is complete and accurate.
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders, following all protocols to maintain specimen integrity.
• Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or orders to ensure 100% accuracy.
• Package specimens for transport, including placing samples in appropriate collection containers or tubes and storing them at required temperatures.
• Follow specific protocols for specimen handling and transport to preserve sample quality and comply with regulatory standards.
• Update patient information accurately in the system and register patients as they arrive.
• Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results as needed to respond to inquiries in a professional and timely manner.
• Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and compliance standards.
• Attend annual departmental trainings and maintain up-to-date knowledge of procedures, regulations, and best practices.
• Contribute to troubleshooting workflow issues and make recommendations to improve processes and efficiency.
• Provide courteous, patient-focused service to individuals from pediatric to geriatric age groups, ensuring a positive experience.
• Draw blood from approximately 25 patients per day while maintaining accuracy, safety, and quality standards.

Requirements

• Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
• Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
• 1–2 years of phlebotomy experience, including blood draws and specimen collection.
• Proficiency in performing venipunctures using straight needles and butterfly needles.
• Experience with blood draws, specimen collection, and specimen processing.
• Ability to work efficiently with a high volume of patients, including drawing approximately 25 patients per day.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
• Strong customer service skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and courteously with patients.
• Ability to work confidently with patients across all age ranges, from pediatrics to geriatrics.
• Attention to detail in labeling, matching requisitions, and verifying orders to ensure 100% accuracy.
• Knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations and commitment to safety and compliance.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Experience working in a fast-paced lab or hospital environment.
• Comfort handling and processing various specimen types, including blood, urine, and fecal samples.
• Ability to read and communicate laboratory results over the phone in a clear and professional manner.
• Strong organizational skills to manage patient registration, specimen processing, and documentation simultaneously.
• Experience working with pediatric and geriatric populations and adapting communication style to different age groups.
• Willingness to attend annual department trainings and stay current on procedures and regulatory requirements.
• Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot workflow issues and contribute to process improvement.

Pay and Schedule

The pay range for this position is $18.98 - $18.98/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
