Phlebotomist I - PRN - Pearland

Responsibilities

  • Performs phlebotomy and other specialized specimen collection procedures in in-patient and out-patient settings.
  • Processes, organizes, labels, and transports specimens.
  • Inputs and extracts data with the Laboratory Information System.
  • Provides patient care independently, handling technical issues as they arise.
  • Performs clerical tasks such as answering phones and faxing lab reports.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Course in phlebotomy/venipuncture preferred.
  • 3 months of phlebotomy work or training experience required, including data entry and specimen handling.
  • Neonatal/pediatric phlebotomy experience preferred.

Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrates skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job.
  • Strong interpersonal and team player skills.
  • Organizational skills to handle a heavy workload and maintain accuracy.
  • Basic computer knowledge to operate multiple computer systems.
  • Knowledge of specimen requirements and different collection containers.
  • Effective communication with patients, physicians, family members, and co-workers.
  • Ability to speak, read, and write English for patient and employee safety.

Essential Functions

  • People Essential Functions: Promotes a positive work environment, collaborates with the patient care team, communicates patient care information comprehensively.
  • Service Essential Functions: Collects and processes biological specimens, handles STAT samples, performs special collections/procedures, performs Laboratory Information System functions, files requisitions and reports appropriately, organizes workload, sets priorities, assists others, performs additional tasks.
  • Quality/Safety Essential Functions: Performs daily check-offs, restocks supplies, identifies patient and labels specimen correctly, processes, organizes, labels, and transports specimens, recognizes and resolves requisition and specimen labeling discrepancies, recognizes and investigates problems, takes remedial action or escalates, maintains a safe environment.
  • Finance Essential Functions: Adjusts work schedule to accommodate departmental/organizational needs, uses time recording system, utilizes department resources/equipment/supplies properly and efficiently.
  • Growth/Innovation Essential Functions: Participates in departmental projects, seeks continuing education opportunities.

Supplemental Requirements

  • Education: High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience: 3 months of phlebotomy work or training experience required, including data entry and specimen handling.
  • Licenses and Certifications: Preferred CPT – Certified Phlebotomy Technician (ACA), ASCP, ACA, AMT, or NCCT.
