Responsibilities
- Perform venipuncture and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles in a safe, accurate, and efficient manner.
- Collect and store blood and other specimens, such as urine or fecal samples, according to established procedures and protocols.
- Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process to patients, ensuring they understand each step and feel comfortable.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes to ensure accurate identification and prevent errors.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by the specific test order and laboratory protocols.
- Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or order to ensure 100% accuracy before processing.
- Package specimens for transport, following all procedures needed to maintain specimen integrity during transit.
- Store specimens at the required temperature and place them in the appropriate collection containers or tubes, accurately labeling them according to protocol.
- Update patient information accurately and promptly in the appropriate systems or records.
- Understand and fully interpret physicians’ orders to ensure correct tests and specimens are collected.
- Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results as needed to respond to inquiries in a professional and timely manner.
- Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations to maintain a safe and compliant work environment.
- Attend annual department trainings and stay current with updated procedures, safety requirements, and best practices.
- Assist in troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection, labeling, and workflow, and make recommendations to improve efficiency.
- Float between multiple locations and provide coverage where needed, supporting operational and staffing needs across sites.
Requirements
- Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
- Minimum of 1 year of active working experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
- Proficiency in performing venipuncture and blood draws using both straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Ability to collect, label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and store specimens according to established procedures.
- Strong attention to detail when matching laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verifying test orders.
- Ability to accurately update patient information and maintain clear, organized records.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- High school diploma or GED.
- 0–2 years of overall work experience, with at least 1 year actively performing venipunctures.
- Knowledge of and ability to comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
- Effective verbal communication skills to explain procedures and respond to inquiries.
