About the role

The Phlebotomist obtains blood specimens, assists with collection of non-blood specimens, performs functions associated with test ordering, and handles general clerical duties to support daily department operations. This position also functions as an EKG technician and performs EKG procedures as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates outpatient services with the Laboratory Secretary.
  • Procures clinical laboratory and EKG results for physicians and nursing units.
  • Manages HMO referral testing services and files HMO requisitions.
  • Distributes lab and pathology reports to physicians and nursing units in the absence of the Laboratory Receptionist.
  • Performs EKGs according to procedure manuals with age-appropriate care.
  • Performs venous, arterial, and capillary punctures to obtain blood specimens for patients of all ages.
  • Assists in collecting non-blood specimens.
  • Replenishes specimen collection supplies.
  • Reviews reference lab collection requisitions for completeness and appropriateness, and obtains required specimens.
  • Performs computer functions to process test orders, including specimen admit, test ordering, printing labels, recording collect/receipt times, charges/credits, and result inquiries.
  • Assists in training and evaluating phlebotomy students as needed.
  • Performs initial setup of blood culture specimens when drawn into vacutainer tubes.
  • Reviews reference lab collection station requisitions for completeness and appropriateness.
  • Distributes patient reports (scheduled and non-scheduled) to appropriate locations.
  • Documents non-interfaced results (e.g., referred tests) after charge tech approval.
  • Uses telephone procedures effectively to communicate results, specimen requirements, and obtain necessary information.
  • Documents required information in manual logs, such as verbal requests and verbal/fax reporting for follow-up on future or incomplete testing.
  • Processes histology/cytology specimens, including patient/specimen computer data entry, packaging specimens for transport, printing accession logs, and patient reports.
  • Cleans and sanitizes laboratory surfaces, glassware, and equipment as designated.
  • Files reports and types documents required for the department.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of an acceptable phlebotomy program from a regionally accredited college/university or an accredited laboratory within the last five years.
  • One year of phlebotomy experience preferred.
  • Phlebotomy Certification (e.g., ASCP, NCA) preferred.
