Phlebotomist

In this role, you will work closely with patients, providers, and laboratory staff to ensure accurate specimen collection, regulatory compliance, and the highest standards of quality and service.

Responsibilities

• Perform phlebotomy professionally, competently, and with compassion for the patient.
• Maintain a safe and clean environment for all staff members and patients, including collecting and disposing of specimens and other contaminated material in accordance with established policies and procedures, infection control standards, and body fluid precautions.
• Ensure requisitions are completed properly, including patient demographic, diagnosis, insurance, and physician information in narrative or ICD-9 code format (legible and valid).
• Review National Coverage Decisions (NCD) and Local Medical Review Policies (LMRP) for Medicare patients to determine if an Advance Beneficiary Notice (ABN) is required and complete it correctly with the patient.
• Complete the Medicare Secondary Form (MSP) when necessary.
• Accurately collect all specimens necessary to fulfill clients’ lab orders.
• Provide accurate communication to clients and their staff regarding the proper ordering of lab tests.
• Keep the draw station clean and adequately stocked with supplies daily.
• Inform your supervisor daily of job performance issues, concerns, and schedule.
• If located within a physician’s office, perform only specimen collection for UWL; no work for the physician or their medical practice is permitted.
• Perform courier duties if called upon, including delivering supplies and obtaining additional information as needed.
• Provide proof of vehicle insurance and a valid driver's license if required.
• Contact Medicare patients to fulfill compliance requirements about MSP forms.
• Perform any other reasonable task assigned by the Phlebotomy Supervisor or Phlebotomy Operations Manager.

Qualifications

Preferred:

• Phlebotomy Certificate and license (if applicable).
• Certification from one of the following:
  • ASCP (Phlebotomy Technician, PBT)
  • NHA (Certified Phlebotomy Technician, CPT)
  • AMT (Registered Phlebotomy Technician, RPT)
• Completion of a phlebotomy training program.

Physical Requirements

• Continuous sitting (up to 6 hours/day).
• Continuous walking (up to 6 hours/day).
• Intermittent bending, squatting, and climbing.
• Simple grasping with both hands.
• Pushing and pulling with both hands.
• Fine manipulation with both hands, repetitive movement.
• Frequent lifting of 10 lbs. or less; occasional lifting of 11 to 35 lbs.
