About the role
The Laboratory Phlebotomist performs phlebotomy under the supervision of the Laboratory, adhering to standards, hospital policies, protocols, and procedures. Duties include collecting and reporting patient data, maintaining inventory, assisting nursing and lab staff, and participating in interdisciplinary team efforts.
Responsibilities
- Performs phlebotomy procedures including venipuncture for patients ranging from neonate to geriatric.
- Maintains positive patient identification and specimen labeling.
- Transports specimens according to infection and safety policies.
- Documents patient data accurately and promptly informs the patient's RN of pertinent information.
- Maintains an organized work environment and optimizes inventory supplies.
- Communicates effectively with staff to resolve or refer problems and documents critical issues.
- Prepares for performance evaluations by submitting required documents.
- Pays extra attention to high-risk and isolated patients.
Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Successful completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program.
- One to two years of phlebotomy experience in a related work environment.
Qualifications
- Medical/nursing service program which includes phlebotomy is acceptable.
- National Certification as a Phlebotomist is preferred but not required.
