About the role
The Phlebotomist I is responsible for accurate collection and handling of patient laboratory specimens for diagnostic testing according to established best practices in a professional medical environment.
Responsibilities
- Accurately collect patient specimens for diagnostic testing while working in a professional medical environment.
- Work in a dynamic and engaging team, ranging from fast-paced hospital settings to high/low volume clinics.
- Gain valuable experience and knowledge to prepare for workplace and career advancement.
- Perform specimen collection using various techniques such as venipuncture, capillary puncture, PIVO, and throat swab collections.
- Collect specimens from patients across various acuities, including Outpatient, Emergency Department, and Inpatient settings.
- Adhere to and enforce laboratory compliance and safety regulations.
- Navigate multiple computer systems and work well as a member of a team.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
- Communicate procedures and instructions with patients and family members, demonstrating empathy during every interaction.
- Develop skills such as patient registration, participation in CODE response teams, training and mentoring new staff, and specimen processing.
- Participate in special projects as required by site or assigned by the team or department leader.
- Manage organizational skills, work independently, and manage stressful situations professionally.
- Take on-call shifts and participate in holiday rotations, according to department or facility needs.
Requirements
- BLS Required
- High School Diploma or equivalent, Preferred
- Six months of phlebotomy experience, phlebotomy training, or national certification as approved by manager/supervisor, Preferred
