Phlebotomist

About the role

The Phlebotomist I is responsible for accurate collection and handling of patient laboratory specimens for diagnostic testing according to established best practices in a professional medical environment.

Responsibilities

• Accurately collect patient specimens for diagnostic testing while working in a professional medical environment.
• Work in a dynamic and engaging team, managing a workload that ranges from fast-paced hospital settings to high/low volume clinics.
• Gain valuable experience and knowledge to prepare for workplace and career advancement.
• Perform specimen collection using various techniques such as venipuncture, capillary puncture, PIVO, and throat swab collections.
• Collect specimens from patients across various acuities, including Outpatient, Emergency Department, and Inpatient settings, including newborns, patients in intensive care, and all other areas of the hospital.
• Adhere to and enforce standards for laboratory compliance and safety regulations.
• Navigate multiple computer systems, work well as a member of a team, and maintain a clean and safe work environment.
• Communicate procedures and instructions with patients and family members, demonstrating empathy during every interaction.
• Develop skills such as patient registration, participation in CODE response teams, training and mentoring new staff, and specimen processing.
• Participate in special projects as required by site or assigned by the team or department leader.
• Manage organizational skills, work independently, and navigate multiple computer systems.
• Take on-call shifts and participate in holiday rotations, according to department or facility needs.

Requirements

• BLS Required
• High School Diploma or equivalent
• Six months of phlebotomy experience, phlebotomy training, or national certification as approved by manager/supervisor (preferred)

Physical Requirements

• Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.
• Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.
• Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy.
• Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients.
• Walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment.
• Push/pull gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items.
• Navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc.).
• May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.
• For roles requiring driving: Expected to drive a vehicle which requires sitting, seeing and reading signs, traffic signals, and other vehicles.

Pay

The hourly range for this position is $18.94 - $24.62.
