Provides expertise in blood draws and specimen preparation. Ability to put patients at ease and obtain sufficient samples with minimal discomfort across a wide demographic is critical to our commitment to high-quality care.
Responsibilities
- Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, and decontaminate equipment
- Update patient information and collect/store specimens according to established procedures
- Explain venipuncture or other specimen collection processes clearly and courteously
- Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes; label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required
- Verify test requisitions or computer labels against scripts for 100% accuracy
- Package specimens for transport, ensuring proper temperature, container, labeling, and transport protocols
- Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations, including wearing appropriate PPE
- Attend annual department trainings
- Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to address inquiries
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED
- Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment (required in CA, NV, WA, and LA)
- Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
Preferred Qualifications
- Excellent patient interaction skills, both in person and by phone
- Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
- Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time
- Ability to lift 20 pounds
- Frequent contact with water (hand washing and cleaning), biohazardous body fluids, and hazardous chemicals
