Responsibilities

  • Perform venipunctures and other blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles in a fast-paced outpatient lab environment.
  • Collect, label, and store blood and other specimens (including urine and fecal samples) according to established procedures and protocols.
  • Explain venipuncture and specimen collection procedures clearly and courteously to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes accurately and verify that all information is complete and correct.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders, following all laboratory guidelines.
  • Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or order to ensure 100% accuracy before processing.
  • Package specimens securely for transport and follow all protocols to maintain specimen integrity during handling and shipping.
  • Store specimens at the required temperature and place samples in the appropriate collection containers or tubes with accurate labeling.
  • Update and maintain patient information and specimen records accurately in the system.
  • Record maintenance data and assist with decontamination procedures to support a clean and safe laboratory environment.
  • Understand and fully interpret physicians’ orders to ensure proper tests and collections are performed.
  • Answer telephone calls, provide information, and read laboratory results as needed to respond to inquiries.
  • Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and regulatory requirements.
  • Attend annual department trainings and maintain current knowledge of procedures, regulations, and best practices.
  • Assist with troubleshooting collection or processing issues and make recommendations to improve workflow and efficiency.
  • Work collaboratively as part of a team in a walk-in outpatient lab, contributing to an even workload distribution rather than focusing on a fixed number of daily draws.
  • Participate in 2–4 weeks of initial training and ongoing skill development as required.

Essential Skills

  • Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, as required.
  • Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 2–4 years of overall work experience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in phlebotomy, including blood draws and venipuncture.
  • Experience with specimen collection, labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and packaging.
  • Ability to accurately match laboratory requisitions to specimen tubes and verify orders.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to 100% accuracy in specimen and order handling.
  • Ability to understand and follow physicians’ orders and laboratory protocols.
  • Clear, courteous, and professional communication skills for interacting with patients and colleagues.
  • Knowledge of and adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations and safety standards.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working in a walk-in outpatient laboratory environment.
  • Customer service, particularly in a healthcare or patient-facing setting.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and support an even distribution of workload.
  • Comfort working with patients of all ages in a variety of outpatient scenarios.
  • Willingness to float between multiple locations as needed within the local area.
  • Capacity to learn and adapt quickly during an initial 2–4 week training period.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced setting.

Work Environment

  • Based primarily in a walk-in outpatient laboratory in Chelmsford, MA, with occasional assignments at nearby locations such as Dracut and Lowell as needed.
  • The position is part-time and follows a Saturday schedule from approximately 5:30 a.m. to 1:00–1:30 p.m.
  • The setting includes standard outpatient lab equipment such as centrifuges and specimen storage units, and requires careful adherence to safety, regulatory, and specimen-handling protocols.
  • New hires typically receive 2–4 weeks of training at the location where they will work, ensuring familiarity with procedures, systems, and workflow.
  • Professional clinical attire appropriate for an outpatient laboratory is expected, and the environment emphasizes safety, cleanliness, and collaborative patient care.

Pay And Benefits

  • The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $22.00/hr.
