Responsibilities
- Draws and collects blood samples from patients, verifies records and prepares specimens for laboratory analysis.
- Performs all pre-analytical functions.
- Complies with safety protocols, including wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and maintaining a safe environment.
- Operates the laboratory centrifuge according to specified guidelines.
- Processes clinical specimen and order functions within specified guidelines.
- Fulfills aseptic collection procedures for blood cultures with a contamination rate below 3%.
- Maintains phlebotomy areas in a sanitary and properly supplied condition.
- Ensures positive patient identification and specimen labeling with less than 2 incidents per year.
- Utilizes specimen collection devices and techniques correctly with less than 2 incidents per year.
- Participates in committees, department processes, and special projects as assigned.
Qualifications
- 1 year Phlebotomy Experience
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Phlebotomy, MLA, or MA certification or license obtained within three (3) months of employment
- Certified Phlebotomist or obtain a La. Medical Laboratory Assistant license
- Good interpersonal/human relations skills
- Good oral/written communication skills
- Good teamwork skills
- Good critical thinking/decision making skills
- Good organizational skills
