Responsibilities

  • Identifies patients, collects samples and labels specimens according to established protocol in order to provide optimal sample quality for laboratory analysis.
  • Captures and maintains records of tests performed and blood samples taken.
  • Maintains an inventory of supplies in work areas and requests and orders supplies as necessary to ensure efficient departmental operations and avoid duplication of energy and services whenever possible.
  • Demonstrates initiative in adapting to changes or unusual circumstances, especially those not covered by written or verbal instructions, in a way that promotes cooperation and minimizes disruption to the working environment.
  • Performs an acceptable productivity level without a significant error rate on a variety of waived or moderate complex procedures.
  • Schedules and assigns work to staff members, monitors work quality and quantity, and ensures efficient departmental operations by providing supervisory support when needed.
  • Collaborates with co-workers to inform them of relevant departmental policies and procedures, and allocates tasks to co-workers as needed.
  • Treats all co-workers with compassion, understanding, and respect, and strives to enhance co-worker performance through cooperative effort and action.
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with patients, physicians, pathologists, staff, and other individuals.

Qualifications

  • One year in phlebotomy with demonstrated proficiency in all age groups
  • High School or equivalent

Special Skills and Licensure

  • If licensed MLA, follows standardized procedures in the performance of waived or moderate complex testing, helps prepare samples for testing and analyzes test results for accuracy, acceptability, and critical limits.
