About the Role

The Phlebotomist 2 is responsible for properly identifying patients, drawing blood samples, and sending them to the laboratory for analysis. This role maintains records of tests performed and blood samples taken and may perform waived or moderate complex tests in a laboratory setting. The Phlebotomist 2 may also assist in the supervision and training of lower-level Phlebotomists.

Responsibilities

  • Performs an acceptable productivity level without a significant error rate.
  • Identifies patients, collects samples, and labels specimens according to established protocol to provide optimal sample quality for laboratory analysis.
  • Coordinates, plans, and utilizes time efficiently to prioritize and organize duties while remaining flexible to meet the needs of laboratory service customers.
  • Maintains an inventory of supplies in work areas and requests/orders supplies as necessary to ensure efficient departmental operations.
  • Demonstrates initiative in adapting to changes or unusual circumstances, promoting cooperation and minimizing disruption.
  • Performs waived or moderate complex procedures with acceptable productivity and minimal error.
  • Ensures quality in all aspects of daily functions, including routine blood collection, bedside testing, and culture collection, in compliance with established policies and procedures.
  • May schedule and assign work to staff, monitor work quality and quantity, and provide supervisory support.
  • Combines ethical judgment with technical skill within policy and legal guidelines for decision-making and procedure performance.
  • Uses professional discretion with patient information and maintains confidentiality of patient records.
  • Observes and adheres to all departmental and hospital policies, safety, quality assurance, and infection control standards.
  • Exhibits a professional manner, appearance, and performance in delivering quality healthcare services.
  • Possesses and maintains a keen knowledge of job responsibilities through ongoing education to ensure high-quality healthcare.
  • Follows standardized procedures for specimen collection and handling to preserve specimen integrity and validity.
  • If licensed as a Medical Lab Assistant (MLA), follows standardized procedures for waived or moderate complex testing, prepares samples, and analyzes test results for accuracy.
  • May provide training and orientation for assigned employees, inform co-workers of policies, and allocate tasks as needed.
  • Treats co-workers with compassion, understanding, and respect to enhance performance through cooperation.
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with patients, physicians, pathologists, staff, and other individuals.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or requested.

Requirements

  • One year of experience in phlebotomy with demonstrated proficiency in all age groups.
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • May require Louisiana License as a Medical Lab Assistant (LSBME) within 6 months of employment if performing waived or moderate complex testing duties.
