PhD Data Science Internship 2027 (USA)
About the role
At Pinterest, millions of people come to the platform to find creative ideas, dream about new possibilities, and plan lasting memories. The mission is to bring everyone the inspiration to create a life they love. AI is a powerful partner that augments creativity and amplifies impact. As a Data Science intern, you will help evolve and shape the future of the product by inspiring Pinners, connecting them with actionable content, understanding advertisers, measuring value, and enabling faster evaluation of product changes. You will apply quantitative analysis, statistical techniques, modeling, and data mining while working cross‑functionally with engineering and product partners. Your work will influence the team roadmap, identify product opportunities, refine the experimentation platform, and drive key initiatives, turning insights into real‑world products.
Responsibilities
- Influence and evolve the product roadmap to fulfill the mission – bring everyone the inspiration to create a life they love – using data and exploratory analysis to understand user behavior and trends, and identify opportunities for product innovation.
- Design and implement core metrics that serve as north stars for team efforts and help design and evaluate A/B experiments that drive these metrics.
- Explore alternative experimentation techniques to help internal teams evaluate their ideas faster.
- Gather explicit signals about Pinner, Merchant, Creator, or Advertiser preferences and tastes using survey methodologies and statistical/modeling‑based approaches.
- Work cross‑functionally to build and communicate key insights, collaborating closely with product managers, engineers, designers, and researchers to help build the next experiences on Pinterest.
Requirements
- Currently pursuing a PhD degree in statistics, mathematics, economics, applied sciences, computer science, or a related field.
- Ability to manipulate large data sets with high dimensionality and complexity; fluency in SQL and a scripting language (Python or R).
- Experience solving analytical problems using quantitative approaches including Machine Learning, Statistical Modeling, Forecasting, Econometrics, or other related fields.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to explain learnings to both technical and non‑technical partners.
- Strong critical thinking when working with AI‑generated suggestions, with a clear approach to validating correctness, performance, security, and maintainability.
- Ability to connect data analysis to real business problems in order to impact business performance.
- In‑office requirement: the role may require you to be located near an office for in‑person collaboration, thus needing to be a commutable distance from one of Pinterest’s offices (San Francisco, Palo Alto, New York, or Seattle).
Pay
US based applicants only: the salary for this position is $12,100 monthly.
