Responsibilities

- Prepares and distributes medication products to fulfill medication orders
- Accurately compounds sterile and non-sterile products, including chemotherapy and parenteral nutrition, in accordance with facility, state, and federal laws and regulations
- Answers the telephone, identifying self and department and directing calls to appropriate personnel in a professional and courteous manner
- Safeguards the appropriate and adequate medication inventory by restocking, rotating stock, removing expired medications, packaging medications, and ordering supplies
- Accurately performs data entry for patient billing
- Maintains a neat, clean, orderly, and secure department
- Ensures the appropriate preparation and dispersal of medications in accordance with facility, state, and national laws and regulations
- Prioritizes the importance of preventing errors, accidents, and infections within the workplace and reports potential or actual concerns immediately
- Complies with Iowa Board of Pharmacy requirements for technician in training
Qualifications
- Must be high school graduate/equivalent or higher level of education
- Must be registered with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician Trainee prior to first day of work
- Must then maintain a current Pharmacy Technician Trainee registration and be in good standing with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy
- Must obtain registration as a Certified Pharmacy Technician prior to the expiration of the technician trainee registration with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy
- Must be able to proficiently read, write and speak English
- Must have strong math skills, with some basic algebra
- Some college training preferred
- Experience in a hospital or retail pharmacy desirable
- Experience in a health care facility desirable
- Proficient in using computer systems
