About the role

Under the direction of the Inpatient Pharmacy Manager, the Pharmacy Technician Supervisor will supervise the activities of the inpatient pharmacy technician and service clerk staff. Responsibilities include narcotic tracking and accountability, new hire orientation and training, facilitation of cross-training and development of current and future technician staff, oversight of outdate sections in the central pharmacy, unit inspections, and technician scheduling.

This role will play a part on the pharmacy leadership team and will be involved in, or lead, committee meetings, process improvement initiatives, and implementations of new systems. The Supervisor will be directly responsible for performance matters and evaluation of pharmacy technician and pharmacy service clerk staff.

Responsibilities

• Supervise inpatient pharmacy technician and service clerk staff
• Manage narcotic tracking and accountability
• Conduct new hire orientation and training
• Facilitate cross-training and development of technician staff
• Oversee outdate sections in the central pharmacy and unit inspections
• Create and manage technician and service clerk work schedules
• Generate, review, and compare various reports
• Hire, develop, evaluate, and discipline subordinates or make authoritative recommendations
• Complete internal managerial training (e.g., Leadership retreats, Bronson Leadership curriculum, Kalamazoo Leadership Team meetings)
• Implement leadership techniques in daily supervision activities
• Inform the Inpatient Pharmacy Manager and Director of trends within the department
• Train and orient new hires
• Adjust work schedules and assignments based on patient load, staff shortages, and workload volume
• Approve or deny PTO requests
• Evaluate the quality of pharmaceutical services and recommend or implement changes
• Deploy, integrate, and model Bronson’s Plan for Excellence behaviors and standards
• Assist with technician goal setting
• Participate in peer interviews for new technicians
• Track technician outdates areas and unit inspections

Requirements

• High school diploma or general education degree (GED) with courses in mathematics and basic algebra
• At least 2 years of pharmacy tech experience in a hospital setting; preference for previous leadership experience
• Licensed as a Certified Pharmacy Technician in the State of Michigan
• Nationally recognized Pharmacy Technician Certification (PTCB, CPhT, or equivalent) within one year of hire (waived for pharmacy students with a valid pharmacy intern license)
• Qualified at the Pharmacy Technician II level (12 months of Level 1 competency or equivalent, competent in 4 identified areas)

Work Environment

• Clean, well-lighted, and temperature-controlled environment
• May work in chemotherapy preparation satellite with hazardous carcinogens (safety precautions and protective equipment provided)
• Moderate noise level
• Mental and visual fatigue typical of jobs with frequent, significant uncontrollable deadlines
• Up to 40% of time spent operating a personal computer or CRT
• Regularly lifts bulky or moderately heavy weights (up to 50 pounds) and occasionally assists with heavier tasks
