Pharmacy Technician - Medication History

About the role

The primary responsibility of this position is to assist pharmacists in managing medication histories for inpatients and outpatients. This includes collecting and compiling medication information from various sources, verifying allergies, documenting findings, and reporting potential issues.

Responsibilities

  • Interview patients and their families to gather medication information
  • Access pharmacy claims data and contact community pharmacies, physicians' offices, or other healthcare facilities for clarification
  • Work closely with supervising pharmacist and nursing staff to coordinate medication history assessments
  • Verify patient allergy information and ensure complete documentation in the electronic medical record
  • Document medication history and allergy information accurately and promptly
  • Report suspected medication errors or adverse drug reactions to the supervising pharmacist
  • Systematically check pharmacy stock areas for outdated medication and maintain cleanliness
  • Train newly hired pharmacy technicians in their work areas
  • Answer and screen incoming phone calls
  • Perform mathematical calculations and understand the metric system
  • Comply with state and federal laws and regulations affecting pharmacy practice
  • Maintain annual continuing education requirements and pass annual competency assessments
  • Participate in performance improvement activities
  • Maintain performance, patient, and employee satisfaction and financial standards as outlined in the performance evaluation
  • Adhere to DCH Behavioral Standards and policies
  • Perform essential job functions ensuring patient, visitor, and employee safety
  • Identify and address unsafe practices that could harm patients, visitors, and employees
  • Transfer carts, push carts, and other pharmacy equipment as necessary
  • Communicate effectively with staff and patients of all ages

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Currently registered or eligible for registration as a Pharmacy Technician in the State of Alabama
  • Pharmacy technician certification and/or pharmacy experience preferred
  • Able to operate computers, calculators, telephones, and transfer carts
  • Able to read, write, speak, and comprehend English

Qualifications

  • Basic understanding of the metric system
  • Working knowledge of State and Federal laws and regulations affecting pharmacy practice
  • Ability to perform mathematical processes of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
  • Good motor coordination, manual, and finger dexterity
  • Normal hearing and vision
  • Physical ability to stand, walk, reach, sit, crouch, and stoop for extended periods
  • Able to carry objects weighing up to 35 pounds
  • Ability to perform duties with or without reasonable accommodation
