Pharmacy Technician II, Full-Time Days
About the Role
Join UChicago Medicine as a Pharmacy Technician II in the Ambulatory Infusion Pharmacy. This role involves preparing medications and supplies for dispensing under pharmacist supervision and rotating through all work areas of the pharmacy department. The department supports direct patient care for all ages and populations.
Responsibilities
- Replace CPR cart medications following Dr. Cart events.
- Transfer patient-specific medications between Omnicell units upon patient transfers.
- Rotate through all pharmacy work areas, collaborating as a team to ensure pharmaceutical care for patients.
- Fill first doses, restock medications, and handle patient-specific medications from carousels.
- Perform monthly inspections of nursing units, clinics, and pharmacy areas as directed.
- Maintain work areas (IV Room, UD Area, Manufacturing area, storerooms, pharmacy satellites) by restocking and cleaning.
- Answer and triage phone calls according to policy.
- Collect quality assurance data and maintain workload records.
- Prepare medications and supplies for dispensing, including:
- Prepackaging bulk medications into unit dose-specific syringes and vials for adult and pediatric patients.
- Compounding oral suspensions and Grade One mouthwash.
- Compounding IV admixtures, chemotherapy, desensitization medications, high-cost biologics, and pediatric IVs.
- Restocking CPR cart trays.
- Prepare inventories, order drugs and supplies, receive deliveries, and stock shelves in various pharmacy locations.
- Facilitate timely medication distribution by prioritizing orders, consulting pharmacists when needed, and handling STAT orders.
- Complete and pass required annual technician competencies.
- Comply with all departmental, hospital, and regulatory policies, as well as state and federal laws.
- Assist in training new pharmacists and technician employees.
- Perform other patient- or drug-related duties within the legal scope of licensure as assigned.
Requirements
- Current Illinois Pharmacy Technician License.
- High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
- IV room non-hazardous and hazardous compounding experience required; chemo compounding experience preferred.
- Minimum of one year of pharmacy experience or completion of an ASHP-approved pharmacy technician vocational course.
- Ability to work collaboratively to provide optimal patient care and pharmaceutical services.
- Strong communication skills for interacting with patients and staff.
- Considerable knowledge of basic pharmacy practices, procedures, medications, and medical supplies.
- Familiarity with record-keeping practices and computer/keyboard usage.
- Successful completion of core and annual technician competencies.
- Attention to detail and strong verbal communication skills.
- Sensitivity to patient care issues as they pertain to pharmacy practice.
Preferred Qualifications
- Illinois Pharmacy Technician Certification.
Schedule
This is a full-time (1.0 FTE) position, generally requiring 40 hours per week. The anticipated shift is day shift, with start times between 6:30 AM and 9:30 AM, Monday through Friday. No on-call shifts are expected. The role is based 100% at the Hyde Park campus.

Pay
The pay range for this position reflects the anticipated wage or salary for a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is based on current market data, reviewed annually. Compensation at hire will vary based on candidate qualifications, experience, and organizational considerations, including internal equity. Employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements will have pay ranges negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
