About the role

To prepare and distribute routine dosage orders, prepackage pharmaceuticals, and prepare sterile compounds as directed. Responsibilities include measuring, mixing, counting, labeling, and recording amounts of dosages and prescriptions, as well as assisting the pharmacist in dispensing prescriptions.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the preparation and dispensing of prescriptions; counts, packages, and labels dosages.
  • Prices and files prescriptions.
  • Adds measured drugs or nutrients to intravenous solutions under sterile conditions to prepare intravenous (IV) packs under supervision.
  • Participates in regulatory documentation and daily processes specific to the area.
  • Maintains appropriate stock levels and informs supervisor of stock needs and shortages.
  • Cleans and helps maintain equipment and work area per established procedures.
  • Accesses patient profiles and electronic health records as needed to accomplish assigned tasks.
  • Participates in medication-related charge documentation and submission activities.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Completion of a pre-employment drug screen required.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of procedures and standards for the labeling and dispensing of prescribed medications.
  • Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
  • Verbal and written communication skills.
  • Interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to sort, check, count, and verify numbers.

Certifications, Licenses, or Registration

Pharmacy technician registration or Student-Controlled Substance Registration with the Mississippi State Board of Pharmacy.

Physical and Environmental Demands

  • Occasional exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood-borne pathogens, fumes, or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals (requires attention to safety considerations).
  • Occasional traveling to offsite locations.
  • Constant work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality.
  • Frequent bending, occasional lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds, occasional climbing, occasional crouching/stooping, occasional kneeling, occasional pushing/pulling, occasional reaching.
  • Frequent sitting, frequent standing, occasional twisting, and frequent walking.
