About the role

The Pharmacy Tech role supports the Department of Pharmacy in providing pharmacy services with a focus on accuracy and patient safety.

Responsibilities

  • Works under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist and all medication-related activities must be reviewed and approved by a pharmacist.
  • Manages Pyxis inventory by performing accurate drug selection, refilling, loading, stock rotation, and expiration date entry of medications in the Pyxis machines.
  • Ensures appropriate and secure handling and management of controlled substances from receipt to delivery in accordance with department policies and regulations.
  • Removes expired or damaged products from Pyxis machines, medication rooms, and pharmacy inventory promptly.
  • Aids pharmacists in providing timely pharmacy services such as drug delivery, resolving Pyxis and Talyst issues, addressing urgent patient care needs, and selecting unit dose medications for patients.
  • Prepares and fills all medication requests, floor stock requests, emergency code trays, EMS needs, and various medication kits.
  • Performs controlled substance inventory, reviews controlled drug utilization reports, and fulfills other departmental requirements.
  • Maintains refrigerator, freezer, and room temperature logs according to departmental and regulatory standards.
  • Completes billing/charging duties as needed.
  • Performs monthly medication room and pharmacy inventory inspections in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
  • Receives, inventories, and stores wholesaler medication orders accurately and in compliance with USP Hazardous Drugs, 340B regulations, and Verify on Receipt software.
  • Ensures bar code and NDC accuracy for inventory, packaging medications into unit of use containers, and maintaining accurate documentation.
  • Manages, operates, triages, and performs preventative maintenance on pharmacy equipment safely and correctly.
  • Completes continuous training and education, department-specific competencies, regulatory compliance, and organizational requirements as assigned.
  • Complies with departmental organizational policies and procedures and external agency requirements.
  • Performs purchasing duties in compliance with 340B and Drug Supply Chain Security Act requirements and exercises fiscal responsibility.
  • Triages medication needs and requests through the electronic health record (Epic).
  • Prepares extemporaneous non-sterile preparations according to USP795 regulations.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent required.
  • Active pharmacy technician state registration (CT license) required.
  • National pharmacy technician certification (CPhT) preferred but required within six (6) months of hire.
