This position supports Pharmacy Services in all locations (acute, community, ambulatory, specialty) as a Float/coverage role, covering for other pharmacy technician positions across various shifts including days, evenings, weekends, and 2-3 holidays per year. Shifts are typically 8 hours but may extend to 10 hours, covering multiple areas within the hospital.

About the role

The Pharmacy Technician assists the pharmacist in delivering safe, efficacious, efficient, and cost-effective pharmaceutical care. This role is integral to the pharmacy team, participating in procedural aspects of pharmacy practice under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist or technician supervisor. Training will be provided to cover areas including but not limited to: OR, sterile prep room (IV room), and Central pharmacy.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with all phases of pharmacy services under pharmacist supervision as required by state practice and job duties.
  • Answers phones and provides excellent customer service appropriate to the practice site.
  • Assists the pharmacist in collecting clinical and patient information and maintaining records as required by regulation and policy.
  • Utilizes pharmacy technology to prepare medication orders, perform calculations, and compound medications accurately in accordance with state law, policies, and protocols.
  • Ensures appropriate supervision and accuracy checks by pharmacists, understanding when verification is required.
  • Accurately fills and maintains medication supplies, including verifying and monitoring controlled substance inventories for security, accuracy, cost-effectiveness, and 340B/Charging management.
  • Packages and labels medications accurately to minimize waste.
  • Maintains pharmacy cleanliness and orderliness.
  • Communicates with caregivers regarding responsibilities, identifies safety concerns, and escalates issues to the pharmacist as appropriate.
  • Participates in departmental meetings, contributing ideas for process improvements and best practices.
  • Promotes the mission, vision, and values of Intermountain Health and adheres to service behavior standards.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by management, delivering detail-oriented and flexible care.

  • Competent and effective in assigned technical responsibilities, seeking training and peer feedback.
  • Understands and complies with state and federal laws, regulations, policies, and guidelines related to pharmacy practice.
  • Supports financial responsibilities of the department, facility, and Intermountain Health.
  • Provides timely delivery of medications, information, and service while actively engaging in department and team goals.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to function in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment.
  • Proficient in using computers and software programs, including Microsoft Office Suite and Google; ability to learn new applications.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification as appropriate to the practice site.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Current pharmacy technician certification and/or license applicable to the state of practice.
  • Current knowledge of state and federal regulations and statutes regarding pharmacy practice and drug distribution.
  • Regular attendance to perform work during scheduled shifts, which may be on-site or remote as appropriate.
  • Ability to communicate effectively within a multi-functional team.
  • Physical requirements include carrying, hearing/listening, lifting, manual dexterity, pulling/pushing, seeing, climbing, crawling, speaking, squatting/kneeling, standing, and walking as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Sterile and/or non-sterile compounding experience.
  • Hospital pharmacy experience.
  • Pediatric pharmacy experience.

Pay

The hourly range for this position is $20.73 - $31.58, dependent upon experience.
