Pharmacy Technician 3 – Prior Authorization

About the role

The Pharmacy Technician 3 is responsible for gathering information from medical records and other sources as required to prepare and submit prior authorization requests and conduct benefit checks. They communicate on the status of requests to requesting parties as appropriate and may work to resolve complex prior authorization requests. They maintain a database of activities to document workload and impact on patient outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Covers workflow for Prior Authorization submission and facilitates medication access
  • Data analysis and quality improvement/assurance activities

Requirements

  • California Licensed Pharmacy Technician
  • Recent experience processing third party billing
  • Experience in performing pharmacy calculations
  • Experience in the use of pharmacy information systems and look-up of patient data on hospital information systems
  • Knowledge of current California Pharmacy Law
  • Working knowledge of using an electronic medical record (EMR)
  • Demonstrated ability to be organized and to keep accurate records and pay close attention to details
  • Demonstrated knowledge of generic and trade drug names and pharmacy terminology
  • Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated and work with minimal supervision, yet recognize when it is appropriate to seek assistance from others when limits of authority have been reached
  • Problem-solving skills to independently recognize and define a problem and identify the resources available to help solve the problem, create and implement via solutions, and follow through to ensure the problem is resolved to the satisfaction of all parties
  • Interpersonal skills to establish and maintain a friendly, welcoming environment for clinic's/department's customers
  • Excellent customer service skills and communication skills, both orally and in writing

Qualifications

  • Recent Outpatient Pharmacy experience
  • Prior Authorization or Patient Assistance Program experience
  • Familiarity with Hospital and clinic layout, and names and locations of patient care areas

Skills

  • Knowledge of Hospital, Department and University Policies and Procedures
  • Ability to recognize situations that exceed technician authority and ability and must be referred to a pharmacist for resolution
  • Familiarity with Hospital and clinic layout, and names and locations of patient care areas

$35.69 - $44.44 per hour
