Pharmacy Tech II: CFM (FT Days)

About the Role

Under the direction of a pharmacist, a pharmacy technician performs pharmacy-related functions in compliance with departmental policies and procedures and participates as an active member of the pharmacy team to provide pharmaceutical care for patients.

In the retail space, the role includes competency in all responsibilities outlined for Pharmacy Technician I, while performing advanced tasks as outlined by the South Carolina Pharmacy Practice Act requiring Pharmacy Technician Certification.

In the acute care space, accountabilities include one or more of the following as a significant portion of scheduled hours: pediatric responsibilities (drawing up/compounding pediatric doses), non-sterile compounding, advanced inventory fulfillment within warehouse settings, and/or total parenteral nutrition (TPN) compounding.

Responsibilities

• Interprets and prepares medication orders by filling provider orders, medication kits/trays, automated dispensing cabinets, and floor stock requisitions.
• Completes cart fill and code tray refills.
• Handles all controlled substances in compliance with regulations and policies.
• Demonstrates proficiency with work-related computer and automation skills, including automated dispensing cabinets, inventory management technology, label printers, unit dose packing machines, IV room automation, and other pharmacy-specific technologies.
• Accurately enters patient charges and credits.
• Delivers medications to appropriate patient care areas or departments per established schedule and workflow; ensures timely delivery of STAT medications.
• Removes and evaluates medications remaining in delivery, return bins, and medication refrigerators.
• Adheres to regulatory guidelines for pharmacy compounding of sterile and non-sterile preparations, including appropriate documentation.
• Provides excellent customer service, including answering phones within three rings, servicing the pharmacy window promptly, maintaining a clean work area, and starting shifts on time.
• Completes assigned quality assurance tasks, such as expiration checks, clean room documentation, temperature monitoring, inventory checks, floor stock inspections, and equipment maintenance.
• Participates in training new personnel and mentoring new pharmacy technicians and pharmacy interns.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High School diploma or equivalent; OR post-high school degree.
• Six (6) months of experience as a Pharmacy Technician.
• Certified Pharmacy Technician with the State Board of Pharmacy.

Skills

• Knowledge of medical and pharmacy terminology.
• Good mathematical, computer, and aseptic technique skills.
• Knowledge of State Board of Pharmacy, Department of Health, and DEA rules/regulations.
• Strong interpersonal skills for dealing with subordinates, peers, supervisors, and external contacts.
• Problem-solving abilities and ability to work in team situations, including handling urgent or stressful conditions.
• Proficiency with office equipment and computer skills (word processing, spreadsheets, database, data entry).
• Mathematical skills.
