About the Role

Under the direction of a pharmacist, a pharmacy technician performs pharmacy-related functions in compliance with departmental policies and procedures and participates as an active member of the pharmacy team to provide pharmaceutical care for patients. In the acute care space, technicians operate basic automation, perform inventory fulfillment, and complete sterile compounding in non-hazardous settings. In the retail space, technicians fill and sell prescriptions. This role also includes Pharmacy Technician II and Pharmacy Technician Advanced candidates who do not yet meet experience or certification requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately interprets and prepares medication orders by filling provider orders, medication kits/trays, automated dispensing cabinets, and floor stock requisitions.
  • Completes cart fill and code tray refills.
  • Handles all controlled substances in compliance with regulations and policies.
  • Operates the cash register to accept payments for pharmacy products and services.
  • Demonstrates proficiency with pharmacy-related computer and automation skills, including automated dispensing cabinets, inventory management technology, label printers, unit dose packing machines, IV room automation, and other technologies.
  • Enters patient charges and credits.
  • Answers the telephone in a timely manner, screens and prioritizes calls, and responds to requests at the pharmacy window.
  • Fills, labels, and packages medications and pharmaceuticals appropriately.
  • Delivers medications to the correct patient care area or department per schedule and workflow, including STAT medications when required.
  • Removes and evaluates medications remaining in delivery, return bins, and medication refrigerators.
  • Adheres to regulatory guidelines for sterile compounding, including appropriate documentation.
  • Maintains a clean and orderly work area and provides excellent customer service.
  • Completes assigned quality assurance tasks, such as expiration checks, regulatory documentation, temperature monitoring, inventory checks, floor stock inspections, and equipment cleaning/preventative maintenance.
  • Participates in training new personnel and mentoring new pharmacy technicians and pharmacy interns.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent; OR post-high school degree.
  • Pharmacy Technician Registration with the State Board of Pharmacy.
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification required within 2 years (24 months) of hire date.

Skills

  • Thorough knowledge of medical and pharmacy terminology.
  • Good mathematical, computer, and aseptic technique skills.
  • Knowledge of BOP/Dept of Health/DEA rules and regulations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for dealing with subordinates, peers, supervisors, and external parties.
  • Problem-solving abilities and ability to work in team situations.
  • Ability to handle urgent and stressful conditions.
  • Proficient computer skills (word processing, spreadsheets, databases).
  • Data entry and mathematical skills.

Schedule

Evening shift.
