Duties
- Performs thorough verification of insurance and maintains knowledge of payer guidelines.
- Aids pharmacists in the preparation and distribution of medications.
- Operates health-system and pharmacy computer systems.
- Provides quality, timely customer service to the population served.
- Facilitates communication between nursing caregivers, physicians, referral sources, community partners, insurers and other departments as needed.
- Distributes and ships medications.
- Assists with medication access and affordability needs.
- Participates in pharmacy inventory management.
Essential Functions
- In Specialty Pharmacy Environment: Performs thorough verification of insurance and maintains knowledge of payer guidelines. Assists pharmacists in the preparation and distribution of medications. Demonstrates proficiency in operating health-system and pharmacy computer systems. Facilitates communication between nursing caregivers, physicians, referral sources, community partners, insurers and other departments as needed. Distributes and ships medications. Assists with medication access and affordability needs. Participate in pharmacy inventory management.
- In Infusion Environment: Complies with USP standards for compounding sterile products. Complies with USP standards for handling hazardous medications. Performs thorough verification of insurance and maintains knowledge of payer guidelines. Submits and receives prior authorization requests through insurance companies using various application processes. Assists pharmacists in the preparation and distribution of medications. Demonstrates proficiency in operating health-system and pharmacy computer systems. Assists pharmacy staff accountant with billing, accounts receivable, and end of month processes. Schedules and registers duties (Infusion Services). Facilitates communication between nursing caregivers, physicians, referral sources, community partners, insurers and other departments as needed. Distributes and ships medications. Assists with medication access and affordability needs. Participate in pharmacy inventory management.
- In Medication Access Environment: Performs thorough verification of insurance and maintains knowledge of payer guidelines. Submits and receives prior authorization requests through insurance companies using various application processes. Demonstrates proficiency in operating health-system and pharmacy computer systems. Facilitates communication between nursing caregivers, physicians, referral sources, community partners, insurers and other departments as needed. Provides quality, timely customer service to the population served. Assists with medication access and affordability needs. Participate in pharmacy inventory management.
Requirements
- Education: High School Diploma/GED Equivalent
- Registration: Technician Registration - South Dakota Board of Pharmacy within 30 days of hire
- Certification: Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) - Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) OR Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) - National Healthcare Association (NHA)
- Experience: 1+ years of Pharmaceutical Experience
Scheduling Requirements
- Requires the ability to work assigned schedules and hours as determined by the department.
Physical Requirements
- Medium work - Exerting up to 10 pounds of force constantly (67-100% of the time), and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently (34-66% of the time), and or up to 50 pounds of force occasionally (up to 33% of the time), and/or up to 50 pounds rarely to move objects.
- Exposure to radiation and frequent exposure to contaminated needles and infectious body substances.
Job Summary
Pharmacy Specialists perform duties within pharmacies and the health-system to assure appropriate medication delivery and access are provided to patients. They are expected to perform pharmacy technician duties at the top of their certification and may also perform other functions to facilitate operations. Duties vary depending upon setting.
