About the role
The Pharmacy Intern is an individual currently enrolled in a school of Pharmacy and holds an Intern’s License through the school. The Intern performs selective Pharmacy support functions under the supervision of the Pharmacy Director, Assistant Director, Licensed Pharmacist and/or a Lead Pharmacy Technician.
Responsibilities
- Performs selective Pharmacy support functions under the supervision of the Pharmacy Director, Assistant Director, Licensed Pharmacist and/or a Lead Pharmacy Technician.
- Performs Pharmacy work which does not require the professional licensure of a Pharmacist.
- May be assigned special projects designed to offer additional Pharmacy experience and must function in strict accordance with standard, written procedures and guidelines with deviation approved by the supervising Pharmacist.
- Utilizes appropriate resources to complete assignment within allocated time period.
- Adapts to changes in volume/acuity demands.
- Remains calm in crisis situations.
- Adheres to Attendance and Tardiness Policy.
- Serves as a resource as needed in an effective manner to unit and other departments.
- Supports responsible staffing decisions (cancels, places staff on hold/on call, calls in on hold/on call staff appropriately).
- Demonstrates efforts to eliminate waste.
- Reports to work on time and is ready to start work.
- Consistently utilizes Kronos system to document hours of work.
- Demonstrates problem solving ability using appropriate resources.
- Serves as a resource as needed in an effective manner to unit and other departments.
- Is supportive of administrative decisions.

- Is flexible in meeting staffing and scheduling requirements of the department.

- Reports equipment malfunctions to appropriate personnel and correctly completes work order.

- Utilizes standard precautions by wearing protective equipment (goggles, gowns, gloves and uses correct handwashing techniques).

- Fills unit dose drug orders/prescriptions under supervision of the Pharmacist.
- Packages and labels medications under the pharmacist's direction.
- Cleans various areas of the department as required.
- Fills patient medication bins, floor stock exchange carts, automated dispensing machines (by Certified Pharmacy Tech Only) and anesthesia boxes, etc. under supervision of the pharmacist.
- Assists in maintaining inventory control in the pharmacy.
- Assists in the identification and return of outdated medications.
- Delivers medications, exchange carts, and supplies to the various nursing units on a routine basis.
- Answers telephone and work area window, assisting physicians, nursing personnel, and others by directing their questions or requests to the appropriate pharmacist.
- Works in IV Admixture area - prepares IV's, TPN solutions, Intensive Care Nursery/Peds and Chemotherapy under direct supervision of the pharmacist.
- Enters pharmacy charges, via a computer.
- Orders drugs and supplies, restocks drug and supply orders.
Qualifications
- Education: Presently enrolled in Pharmacy school.
- Certification: Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) Certified.
- Licence: Licensed Pharmacy Intern in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- Experience: Six months pharmacy experience. Must be capable of accepting responsibility and following it through to its completion. Must be flexible with schedule to work days, evenings, weekends and holidays.
