Responsibilities

  • Aid in the preparation of medication orders by compounding or admixing medications under supervision.
  • Verify completeness of all orders and ensure proper patient information and physician authorization.
  • Admix drugs accurately and promptly, following department, OSHA, and interoffice guidelines.
  • Calculate correct dosage volumes and convert between metric and apothecary equivalents.
  • Support controlled substance record keeping in line with practice guidelines and regulatory requirements.
  • Dispose of materials used in mixing chemo or non-chemo IVs according to established protocols and laws.
  • Clean hoods daily, check drugs monthly for outdates, and perform quality assurance activities.
  • Maintain accurate temperature logs and logs for protocol and patient assistance drugs.
  • Manage inventory effectively, documenting quantities, lot numbers, and expiration dates as necessary.
  • Provide support across the medication use continuum, including label preparation, documentation, basic data entry, and order medications and supplies.
  • Assist with cleaning and maintenance of the admixture area and the pharmacy department in accordance with state rules and USP compliance.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Entry-level experience in a pharmacy.
  • Recommended Certified Pharmacy Technician certificate, depending on state law requirements.

Physical Demands

  • Full range of body motion including manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.
  • Ability to read and note appropriate measurements.
  • Sitting/standing for extended periods.
  • Occasionally lifting and carrying items weighing up to 40 lbs.
  • Corrected vision and hearing to normal range.

Work Environment

  • Office environment.
  • Regular exposure to direct contact with patients with potential for exposure to toxic substances, medicinal preparations, and chemotherapeutic agents.
