About the role

This is a PRN (as needed) position at the South Dakota Developmental Center, dedicated to enhancing the quality of life and community inclusion for people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities through person-centered services. Responsibilities

  • Dispense client prescriptions and maintain client medication profiles.
  • Compound medications and recommend proper drug dosages for clients to fill written prescriptions issued by physicians and dentists.
  • Dispense medications and other pharmaceutical supplies using standards and physical procedures.
  • Type labels, select correct medicine containers, and choose the appropriate dosage form (liquid, tablet, or capsule).
  • Recommend drug usage or changes to physicians and nurses.
  • Instruct clients in the proper use of their prescribed medications.
  • Review written prescriptions to determine ingredients needed and ensure no overdoses have been prescribed.
  • Maintain client profiles by noting drug doses, interactions, lab work, diets, immunizations, treatments, and allergies to ensure proper medication and care.
  • Maintain drug inventory by determining stock needs, receiving orders, completing inventory cards, and restocking shelves.
  • Provide information to physicians and staff on new drugs, drug incompatibilities, and contradictions of drugs and other pharmaceuticals.
  • Address challenges such as recommending drugs and dosages for clients with difficult-to-treat conditions.

Requirements

  • Must be or eligible to be licensed as a Pharmacist in the State of South Dakota.
  • Knowledge of the principles of specialized sciences directly applicable to pharmacy.
  • Understanding of regulatory and enforcement procedures in drug areas.
  • Familiarity with special instruments and techniques used in compounding and manufacturing pharmaceuticals.
  • Knowledge of chemical, biological, and comparative therapeutic properties of a wide range of drugs and technical literature.
  • Understanding of state and federal laws and hospital regulations regarding pharmacy practices.

Skills

  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to follow instructions and prepare reports and maintain records.
  • Ability to compound prescriptions and manufacture pharmaceuticals.

Pay

$65.60-$72.88 hourly, depending on experience

Schedule

PRN (as needed), temporary or seasonal, non-benefited position, exempt from civil service.

Successful applicants will be required to undergo a background investigation and an abuse and neglect screening. An arrest/conviction record will not necessarily bar employment.
