Job Summary

Reviews prescriptions to ensure accuracy, determine necessary ingredients, and evaluate their suitability. Provides information and advice regarding drug interactions, side effects, dosage, and proper medication storage. Counsels patients on medication administration, possible side effects, expected responses, storage, and any other questions. Monitors patients' health and progress in response to drug therapy.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews, interprets, and dispenses both prescription and non-prescription medication to patients.
  • Takes an active role in addressing prescription issues and advising providers on medication selection, dosage, interactions, and side effects.
  • Counsels patients on medication prescription, including proper administration, possible side effects, expected response, storage, and any other questions posed by the patient.
  • Maintains oversight and clinical supervision for pharmacy series and pharmacy support personnel.
  • Utilizes appropriate age-related patient information to assess the pharmaceutical needs of patients, which may include neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
  • Fulfills various duties in a medical center or institutional setting, including unit dose dispensing, IV admixtures, outpatient prescriptions, navigating the electronic medical record, compounding, and working with automated dispensing devices.
  • Follows established regulations and standards governing the practice of pharmacy.
  • May act as a shift supervisor under direct or indirect supervision by department managers.
  • Demonstrates good written and verbal communication skills.

Qualifications

  • In a retail/community pharmacy setting: Graduate of an accredited School of Pharmacy. Thorough knowledge of drugs and their actions; knowledge of state and local regulations.
  • In a medical center or institutional setting: Graduate of an accredited School of Pharmacy. Thorough knowledge of drugs and their actions; knowledge of state and local regulations. Hospital experience or residency preferred.
  • Licenses must be in good standing by the State Board of Pharmacy in state(s) of practice and/or possess multi-state licensure privileges as required by position.
